Group Owners (1)

Description:

Okay, I am pretty amazed that there isn't already a group for Bay Area film people on Spout.  So I guess I'll create one!

I've just moved back here after 11 years making films in Seattle, and keeping my eyes peeled for cool people who love film here in the East Bay and greater San Francisco area!

Let's hear what you're interested in, and maybe you can fill me in on your favorite theater, cool film organizations, festivals, and goings on that every local film lover should know about?  Speak up!  ;)

Your Favorite Films

Okay, help me out here.  I need all the help I can get trying to create a group.  What are your favorite movies?  Stuff you love, stuff you love to hate, stuff you wish someone would make more of?

I have a hard time finding a concise way to describe my own tastes:  I like films with an imaginative element - the more wild the better (whether Eternal Sunshine or Earth vs. the Flying Saucers or Repo Man), but even a plain-jane drama will do it for me if it's got heart (Secrets and Lies, Sling Blade) - but the best ones combine both!  (Amelie, It's a Wonderful Life).

What about you?  Are your tastes easy to categorize?  Any guilty pleasures?

Re: Your Favorite Films

My ultimate favorite movies are almost always foreign films.  It doesn't matter which country they are from since I believe the foreign film arena is better than the American films.  I'm not saying that there aren't any American films worth seeing...just check out how many movies I have seen and you'll know that's the case.  I agree with you regarding Sling Blade, as it was a fantastic film, well worth seeing twice.

It doesn't matter who is in the film, although I have to admit that there are certain actors that I steer clear of.  It would be way too difficult for me to view a movie with someone in it who just makes me cringe.  They are very few comedies that I like.  Most of them are far too silly for me, so I generally don't watch any of those.  My guilty pleasure is my foreign film video collection.  If the house catches fire, those films are coming with me.

Some particular favorite foreign films:  Night of the Shooting Stars, Ikuru, Jules and Jim, A Special Day.
