Sad Anime

So, what are some of the saddest anime you've seen? I think Grave of the Fireflies is going to be a given here, but what other anime makes you sad?

Some of the sadder ones I've seen are Fullmetal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain. Cowboy BeBop gets pretty depressing towards the end, and Paradise Kiss has a really sad ending too.

Personally, I like watching sad anime better than comedies (even though the comedies are still very good and entertaining), just because their plots always seem a lot deeper, and it's easier to get caught up in them and relate to their emotions. So, what do you guys think?

I think whether an anime is billed as primarily a comedy or action or some other genre, the ones that really affect me enough to call the best leave me in a state that could be described as pensive or wistful.  This is certainly something that anime can do really well.  Especially if it's a series.

You know when I watch anime, there seems to be a hint of sadness in every anime. Its hard to tell which ones I have seen. But thats kind of what makes the anime a lot better and more watchable.

You can't even remember which ones you've seen?

Re:Sad Anime

I would have to say that Saikano is one the saddest anime I have ever seen.

It is definitely a series I enjoyed regardless.

I would also say that Black Lagoon had some rather depressing episodes especially  the last couple in the 2nd season.

As a warning, Black Lagoon is definitely NOT for anyone under 17 years of age in my opinion. It is hands down one of the most violent, bloody, and mature anime series I've ever seen.

I've recently been watching a series called Monster. It is very well done, and doesn't fit into the typical genre-types of anime. It is a mystery, thriller, drama, with some action and a bit of horror. I wouldn't say this series sad in a wistful emo kind of way like Saikano, but it certainly has moments of sadness.

Without a doubt "Grave of the Fireflies" is top of the list but "The

Cat Returns" is also a close call as well.
