Desert Island

This is a simple one, not really a game, just something you do when you're bored.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which 3 movies would you want to have with you.

I don't even know how I'm gonna answer this one, so I'll post mine later.

I'm not asking this question to be snarky (a word Paul seems to like), but what kind of screening equipment and environment is available on this island.  If that answer is a full air conditioned theatre vs. just a little TV and VHS player it might make a difference.  And if there answer is that there is none, then I have to base my answer entirely on what the DVD artwork and liner notes are because it wouldn't have much use beyond that.

I think there is nothing more than a 30 some odd inch tv with a combo dvd/vcr... throw in a laserdisc player as well, just in case. The point is the viewing pleasure may not be the best so pick the movies you would most like to sit through multiple times, regardless of the sound and picture quality.

Ok, without thinking too hard about it, I'm going to say:

The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly

Withnail & I

Fargo

Re:Desert Island

I think Ive got it:

Miller's Crossing - I've sat through this movie soooo many times, I don't think I could go very long without watching it.

Fiddler On The Roof - I have to through a musical in there, that way if the island happens to be populated with monkeys, I could train them to do some of my favorite numbers. "Matchmonkey, matchmonkey, please make me a match................." You know something like that.

Apocalypse Now - I'm not sure why, this just seems like the type of movie I'd like to sit through over and over while stranded on a desert island. The funny thing is, I probably still won't watch the redux........... 3 HOURS IS LONG ENOUGH

You know, I really hate these things, but I can't help putting these lists together myself. How do I pick only 3 movies? Do I go with dense and brainy, hoping that they will provide the longest intellectual stimulation? Do I go with the movies that I just find fun and enjoyable, hoping that they'll always pick up my spirits when rescue doesn't arrive and I'm forced to eat my own fingers one by one? Ah, the hell with it, here's 3 top of my head picks, and a short reason why.

Brazil. The Criterion edition(I'm assuming this 3-disc set is allowable). For one, I love the movie, but it also seems like the most bang for my buck in terms of length. 3 discs, 2 movies, documentaries, commentaries.

Lost Highway. The first Lynch movie I saw in a theatre, and I can understand the criticisms it gets from some, but it was such a monumental experience in my high school life. It was like the scales fell from my eyes, and it really put me down the path to true film afficianado. Also, I saw this every night it played in our local arthouse theatre(one week), and every night had a different theory about what it all meant and what actually happened.

The Big Lebowski. If nothing else than to be the first to pick this sure to be popular pick. I know it has a pretty big cult, but I think it actually gets a bit underrated by 'serious' critics. This movie proves that silly comedy can still be intelligent.

Re:Desert Island

If I could only watch three movies for the rest of my life (or until rescued) I easily pick

1. Fellini's 8 1/2- in order to remember humanity

2. Demme's Stop Making Sense- It's a perfect concert of my favorite music. Nothing makes me happier. i could watch it every day of my life.

Third, This is a tough one, but I ruled out Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice (with would remind of the ever present struggle on the island, a spritual battle, and the ultimate sacrifice) and so the number 3 is...

3. Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut because I need to remember what a real loving relationship looks like.

One of my favorite authors, G.K. Chesterton, would've said "Why, a documentary on practical shipbuilding of course!"

Having monkeys to teach and watch perform would help pass the time!

I'm not going to pick what are strictly my favorite movies because a depressing movie to me like Chinatown won't do me any good -- I'll need stuff that inspires me to keep going, just keep living from day to day. I'm probably taking this too seriously, but I like the exercise:

1. Pan's Labyrinth (yeah it's sad, but I interpret the ending as hopeful and a call to responsibility)

2. The Big Lebowski (I agree with what TheWorkingDead said about it)

3. Fantasia  (I don't even love Fantasia that much, but I would write choral pieces to go along with it, and encourage the monkeys to join in. the performance could be different every time)

"The 13th Warrior" , "Jaws" , and this X-rated version of "Alice In Wonderland" starring Kristine DeBell, one of the most beautiful women in the world...
