Description: Both unexpectedly funny and heartbreaking, 51 Birch Street is the first-person account of Doug Block’s unpredictable journey through a whirlwind of dramatic life-changing events: the death of his mother, the uncovering of decades of family secrets, and the ensuing reconciliation with his father. What begins as his own intimate, autobiographical story, soon evolves into a broader meditation on the universal themes of love, marriage, fidelity and the mystery of family.

And this is the director, himself, chiming in for the first time.  Very pleased to be taking part in this event.

51 Birch Street will be released theatrically via Truly Indie beginning Oct 18 in NY, Oct 20 in LA, then rolling out to San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, Boston and others.   So you'll be getting a sneak preview well ahead of the rest of the country.

I've told Paul I'm happy to talk in detail here about the Truly Indie model of distribution, which is a kind of hybrid between what a normal small distributor would do (and get all of your other rights, like tv and dvd, in the process) and what's known as a service deal, where you hire a distributor to do their thing but you keep all your other rights.

But what I'm really excited about is the idea of exploring with Spout members how to do grassroots marketing in this day and age of internet social networking.  You probably know as much or more about it than I do, so it could be a great exchange of information and ideas.

So, look forward to talking with you all...

Doug Block

Doug,

It's very great to have you here at Spout, I'm looking forward to attending the event in Grand Rapids at the UICA, and viewing your film for the first time. I'm a film watcher, not a film maker or a distributor, just someone interested in seeing your film and hearing about your work.

I'm curious about how you made your movie, who edited it, and why it's coming to Grand Rapids. Was it filmed digitally with a home video camera and edited in FinalCut? Or did someone else or company do it for you?

Just a few questions!

Marie-Claire (aka patches)
