Too bad things ended so bad between Jackson and New Line Cinema (or was it Miramax??).  Doesn't look like this project will ever be happening.

Thanks for the update!

I think I may like a Peter Jackson Hobbit movie more than Lord of the Rings.  It's just not quite as gigantic and daunting of a story.  Yes it is epic in it's own way, but much more straightforward and focused on one character and story.

King Kong? Tanked? It made over 530million in PROFIT!(boxofficemojo.com) And it was mainly shot in New Zealand, also. I loved it, at least.

Thats not to say Jackson shouldn't make The Hobbit, that would totally kick ass, and he seems to want to do it. Everyone involved with the series wants Jackson to do it, except for New Line. MGM(new lines partners on the hobbit, since they own some of the copyright) has been lobbying hard for Jackson. But Jackson has an open lawsuit with New Line because New Line wont release the exact numbers concerning Fellowship of the Ring profits(violating their contract in the process). Thats the bare-bones of it, but you can read what Peter Jackson had to say on it here.

Now, just last week a judge fined New Line $125,000 for not performing the contractually obligated audit, and ordered them to complete it. This means the lawsuit may be a bit closer to being resolved, and may be good news because Jackson has said he wont even discuss making the Hobbit with New Line until the lawsuit is settled(regardless of the outcome). Strangely it looks like Jackson has been in talks with MGM to helm the movie(s), since New Line has a limited amount of time before the copyright leaves their hands. I know they've been actively looking for new directors, and one they mentioned was Sam Raimi, but of course his reply was 'only if Peter Jackson is ok with it'

Sorry, this may have already been discussed in here. It looks like a string of posts were missing from this thread, so I apologize if I'm boring everyone with stuff thats already been discussed.

Yeah it's another one of those crappy situations where someone's account apparently got deleted so all of the messages they had posted that we had responded to earlier are now missing...
