Coming of age in the 80s

The "Coming of Age in the 80s" list takes me back like that one song by The Outfield. Is it taking you back too? And have any of you seen Breakin'?

Ok...I've seen Breakin', as well as Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984).  (Clearly the original was the best.)  But I have a question for this group:  What do you see as the hallmark for a great 80's movie?  Especially one that had influence or was memorable through your "coming of age"?  And what is the age you "come of age" at?

Re: Coming of age in the 80s

I was one of those around in the 80s and graduating from high school and going to college during the first half...

it was a time of course of rebound from the 70's era and early on it was marked by embracing of many fads including the "preppy fad" that hit while i was at college

suddenly everyone was wearing docker shoes, girls were wearing plaid skirs, and everyone was wearing alligators on their chests.....like over night.

i think it was an era of searching for an indentity post 70s.,..but maybe also an era of looking inward rather than outward so much

some of the 80's films do show a certain amount of self-absorbtion

some of the 80's emergent pop stars show a certain amount of indentity quest.....madonna, boy george, prince, etc....

One of my favorite 80s films was St. Elmo's fire.....  Not sure why I liked it so much but I saw it in college and thought it was great.    You can really see the theme of kind of self absorbed searching there...... (side note....Demi Moore was in it, although you would hardly recognize her today.... ..!)

A film that saved us all.

Re: Coming of age in the 80s

I "came of age" late in the 80s. So, as you may see from the list, the first half of the decade was strictly PG.

The most 80s of those flicks I have to say would be Footloose. It placated the Moral Majority (ref: Ren's defense of why the high school should put on a dance), was chock full of teen angst and I think somebody lost their virginity. Not to mention the concept of a fight that includes dancing. You could only get away with that in the 80s. Plus, Kenny Loggins and Kevin Bacon. Need I say more?

80's sci-fi: The Last Starfighter - where a girl will actually kiss you because you made high score on a video game.

This is a no-brainer for me.

One of the following is required; 2 or more and you have a "Classic":

1) Any Estevez

2) Molly Ringwald or Ally Sheedy

3) Memorable love anthem.

4) Drug addiction

Mix with liberal doses of  "we're 17 but are so worldly" cynical humor and VOILA!

Re: Coming of age in the 80s

The 80's for me was realizing that the world had other opinions, values, and attitudes far different from me.  I grew up in a very small town and was incredibly shy inspite of my assymetrical short hair-do and braided "tail".  I had so much fun then, as well as some of the worst times of my life.  I love a lot of classics already mentioned in this thread.  St Elmo's fire was one of my favorites too for unknown reasons, though I remember most that it was filmed at night (or just had a really bad lighting director).  Eddie and the Cruisers was great because the (band leader) escaped from his life-or so we were led to believe.  The Big Chill really made me think about my life, and watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High with very wide eyes blew me away in that things like that actually happened.  I thought folks waited 'till they got married; what are these highschool kids doing?  They're younger than me?!  What am I doing?! (or not doing as it was).   I love most the music of the 80's of course- all those great danceable and alternative tunes.  Oh yeah, and I think I bought some red shoes after seeing Footloose.  My  mother wouldn't let me have the boots.
