To get things started...

Welcome to the group! The point (obviously) is to discuss favorite childrens' movies. I guess I'm going to start things off here with asking you all what your favorite childrens' movies are and why. I've got a lot of favorites, but I think my all-time top of the list one is Henry Selick's "James and Giant Peach." I've always been a big fan of stop-motion animation, and also a fan of Roald Dahl's books, so this movie hit both spots for me. I watched it for the first time when I was eight years old, and I was completely and utterly in love. I watched it in the theater twice more, and have watched it on DVD at least three more times since then. The style is just great, and reminds me a lot of Lane Smith's illustrations (I was a big Stinky Cheese Man fan at that age, and still am). I'm not usually a big fan of musical childrens' movies, but this is an exception. I even liked the songs in this one. And, of course, we've got the stop-motion Selick has built his career on, which is, as it was in "Nightmare Before Christmas" quirky, endearing, slightly creepy and altogether flawless.

Well, as a child of the 80s(70s, technically, but I grew up in the 80s), thats where most of my favorite kids movies come from. I won't even try to do a top 10 right now, or name a favorite(I think I'll just go with whatever comes to me while I write this), but here's a couple that come to mind:

The Explorers: Joe Dante is one of my favorite directors, and he's done a great number of movies that are technically family friendly while still being creepy, weird and surreal. He's also pretty good at more straightforward horror. The Explorers was one of those movies I wanted to live in when I was a kid. A sci-fi fan gets plans to build a spaceship in his dreams, and together with his friends they build the ship and are guided into space to meet aliens. Awesome. Also, Eerie Indiana(the original, 1990 version, not the Fox Kids remake a few years later) was a television show that had a monumental impact on me as a youngster. Some complete episodes are on youtube, or you could put down the money for the box set. Totally worth it.

Flight of the Navigator was another one, but that one hasn't held up QUITE so well. I tried watching it recently, and while I liked it, I didnt LOVE it like I used to. Still, I do want one of those aliens that the hero finds in his backpack at the end. It was so gosh-darned cute.

And, of course, Goonies. It came out at the perfect age as a kid, and me and my friends would play in the woods by my house and imagine going off on great treasure hunts. For this reason, I am going to start burying treasure and maps around our house for my daughter when she gets a bit older. Of course, she may not be that into it.
