Manda Bala

Directed by Jason Kohn.

Brazil is a nation where political and economic corruption and violent crime are a way of life for many, and filmmaker Jason Kohn examines some of the more unusual ways they manifest themselves in this documentary. In Manda Bala (Send a Bullet), Kohn's subjects include a plastic surgeon whose practice is dominated by the victims of kidnappers who lost their ears to their captors; a political figure who uses his frog ranch as a cover for illegal business operations which have made him a multi-millionaire; and an auto customizer whose specialty is bullet-proofing luxury cars. Manda Bala (Send A Bullet) won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Re:Manda Bala

Young men travel to a foreign country to recontextualize political corruption and street violence in Cinemascope, while explaining why the result isn't docuporn. My thoughts.

Re:Manda Bala

just to note, for those interested in sao paulo, which is the subject of manda bala: this week's "On the Media" includes a segment on the law in sao paulo that outlaws all billboards, electric signage, and even open and closed signs in bank windows. the law was enacted after manda bala was made. interesting stuff.

Re:Manda Bala

Holy crap, this was a great film.

I watched a couple weeks ago, but exactly what to say about this took some pondering. I still don't think I did it justice, but here's an attempt:
