The American Astronaut

This is a great film by Cory McCabe (whose band, The Billy Nayer Show, also provides the music for) about an Astronaut on a mission to deliver a cat to a bar on the asteroid Ceres. Thus begins a huge chain of events that propels him across our universe and into the hands of Professor Hess. Hess is a sociopathic killer who will only slaughter those he has no beef with, oh, and it's always his birthday. The stark imagery and stream of conciousness apsects of the film are heavily influenced by Lynch's Eraserhead. The film features a dust-bowl era production design, with the Astronaut traversing space in a converted steam engine. Through clever cutting and minimal resources McCabe creates some really effective space effects. It's a sci-fi, space western psuedo musical dreamed up by a bunch of guys in a bar. I originally saw this when it was making its way around college campuses back in 2002. It came out on DVD a couple years back, but I haven't really seen too many people getting excited about it. It's inventive and hilarious. Has anyone seen this? http://www.americanastronaut.com/home.shtml
