Hollywood Zombie Debate - What is YOUR opinion?

Okay, in another discussion Ottobud and NickP were discussing 28 weeks later and if you really consider those people zombies OR just infected people...What makes a Zombie, do they have to be dead FIRST?  What do you think?  What are some other movies that are good examples of that?  Here is a little snippit from our other discussion, both of them make a REALLY good point...

Actually, I'm not clear on that.  Are they really dead?  I think they are just infected, not dead and resurrected.  I don't remember anything in either film saying that they die before being infected, but I might have missed something.

Really good point Ottobud, I really didn't even think of that.  They didn't die first, they just turned RABID as soon as they were infected...but as soon as they were infected they became mindless Maniacs so it was some sort of zombie behavior...something to think about, we could have a good debate about this!

Oh by the way Ottobud, you and Nick P have the best little pictures for yourselves.  Those are really fun!

well, in 28 weeks later......... you could see some zombies running around that were literally missing sections of their torso... even when the helicopter tore some apart... they were moving on the ground.... ow, if they were a rabid human, they would still go by the rules of normal human mortality... meaning, you get chopped in half, your dead.... they were clearly not dead... so, that's why I go towards "zombie"....

I don't beleive it was ever stated that they were dead or alive..... but, does it matter?  The infected are don't die before coming rabid, but I don' t think that should exclude them from being zombies..... I think once they are infected, there body transforms instantly from being human, to not functioning normaly.....

But they die from starvation.. right?? Isn't that what they say at the beginning of 28 weeks later?? The infected starve to death.. zombies don't.... they just keep wandering around....that leads me to believe that Rage..the virus that infects them is some sort of adrenal enhancer that keeps them from feeling pain.. maybe??

I agree with you.  The Infected in 28 Days (and Weeks) Later are not zombies.  They are just infected with the "adrenal enhancer," as you put it.  But, zombies are not supposed to have souls I don't think.  And they wander around because they are searching for what they lost when they died or were murdered.  At least that what some of the literature I've read says.  So, do the Infected in the 28 films have souls or are they just mindless?  I think they really DO have souls.  They are just majorly pissed off, somewhat like you would think a rabid animal might be.  And it doesn't seem to me that the Infected necessarily WANT to eat people.  It seems that they want to INFECT people.  Kind of like an "invasion."  And that's a sign that they have at least some thought processes.  But then again, zombies seem to have a thought process in that they want to get back their soul and rest in peace.  Well, traditional, voodoo zombies do.  The "Romero zombies" as they are called just seem to want to fulfill what I think is the greatest human need:  hunger.  Why are they hungry?  I think the zombie lady in Return of the Living Dead put it nicely when she was asked why zombies eat people:  "THE PAIN..."  So it hurts to be dead...well I would sure think so, what with the rigormortus (I have no idea how to spell that) and bits and pieces of their own bodies falling off here and there.  Anyway, I've wandered of subject.  The point is, the Infected in the 28 movies are not really zombies.  They are just what they are called:  Infected.  And, perhaps, there is an antedote for them.  The only antedote for a zombie is to be shot in the head, seek revenge on the zombie's killer, or find the zombie's soul.  Difficult tasks, I admit.  Zombies are my favorite "monsters," but the Infected are pretty awesome too.

By the way, I read in this book that a woman will turn into a zombie if she dies a virgin...  Kind of makes you wonder why even old cultures thought that slutting around was a bad thing...  Not that I'm saying it's a good thing...  Damn it...

"But, zombies are not supposed to have souls I don't think. "

I remember a discussion about zombie souls that concluded that they do have souls. The issue was whether you could encounter the ghost of a zombie. Can't remember if there was a film in which this happened...

"what I think is the greatest human need:  hunger. "

This may explain why several hot dates I had seemed to peak out at dinner...

... Here is the definition in my 'Webster Contemporary Dictionary: Encyclopedic Edition'...

zom-bie ... n.  In voodoo cults, a snake diety.  The supernatural power by which a dead body is believed to be reanimated.  A corpse reactivated by such power.  Slang  A person who looks weird or behaves eccentrically, mechanically, etc.  A strong cocktail made of several kinds of rum, fruit juices, and liqueurs...

I think that by THIS definition you are ALL correct!

That was a really good explanation, Froggy!  It really puts light on the infected in 28 days.  Whew, at least I am safe from being a zombie.  YAY!!!  hee hee.  It makes you wonder in some cultures if a woman was dying and was a virgin, if they didn't have someone to remedy that before she died - just in case...that is really interesting.

Where did that myth originate?

The way I heard it was that a woman will turn into a zombie if she gets married.

Why is it that folks debate whether somebody is a zombie or just infected with a virus, but with vampires and werewolves, there is no debate whether the cause is a virus or something else? Seems like zombies come in for a lot more grief than the other monster types.

Yeah the definition of vampires can be pretty liberal as well, but people don't seem to argue it as much.  Or maybe just not here as everyone seems to be obsessed with zombies.
