the blind buy?

I just read a review where someone was recommending a movie and saying it wasn't good to recommend it as a "blind buy" but definitely good enough to recommend for a rental.

This idea of a "blind buy".  I know lots of people do that and maybe they just have money to burn, but I've never done that in my life and can't imagine I ever would.  I don't have the biggest DVD collection anyways though.  I don't even own most of my absolute favorite movies.  I just assume if I ever want to watch them again I can just rent them again.

Anyone out there care to discuss this phenomena of the "blind buy"?

I've never made a blind buy, but the official book of man recommends trying it at least once in your life.  They don't narrow it down to DVD per se, but rather recommend that you walk into a grocery store, steal some old lady's filled up cart and just buy whatever is in it.  I've never had the guts to do it myself, but one day I'm going to try it and will end up with a bunch of baby forumula I don't need.

Haha, that's quite a challenge.  Even more so if you go into a store where you've convined yourself before you even walk in there there's nothing there you'd want to buy.  This would probably be different for everyone.  Maybe try it out at a sex shop.

In the book of man, they suggest using the technique as a way to make sure that you are eating things that your mom would normally buy vs. the crap you digest as a bachelor.  I've always wanted to try it, but don't really have the guts.

When I was in college, I used to go to garage sales and buy records for $1.  It didn't matter if I had even heard of them, I bought them no matter what.  I ended up with a lot of good music that summer, but it took me a long time to figure out what I did and didn't like.

I could see myself doing a blind movie rental, but a blind buy seems gutsy.  Once I see a movie I don't usually want to see it again unless it's amazingly fantastic.

Well yeah almost everything I rent is something I've never seen before.  Nothing wrong with that.  How else would you see a movie if you are only allowed to rent or buy things you've already seen?  Unless you see everything in the theater as soon as it comes out!

Speaking of blind buys, I couldn't be happier with my mail-order bride from Kyrgizistan. Purchased absolutely sight-unseen.

Awesome!

Is she blind herself?  I wonder if that would be a boon or not.

I'm also assuming that you were blind at the time you were writing in the name of the country on the order form.

LOL!

Back to your question, I have done that before.  I bought Love Actually because it was super on sale at the time, and everyone I had known who had seen it loved it.  I liked it a lot and don't mind the fact that I bought it, though it isn't my favorite.  But, it's British, so it was probably not doomed to fail for me.

I would never blind buy without some solid recommendations behind it and some sincere interest in the movie, though.  Not unless the movie were the price it would otherwise be to rent it.

Re: the blind buy?

Why do you guys buy dvds in the first place?

I've always gone to library book sales and I've got lots of books on my shelves, but no dvds. The books aren't to read, exactly. Just nice to have them handy. And they do decorate a room. Over the years, especially with the advent of dvds instead of tapes, I hear more and more about folks' movie collections. What they've got, what they want, etc. It has finally dawned on me that for many, the dvd collection is the thing, not so much a shelffull of books anymore.  Or maybe in addition to.

Is it just to have them to have them, or do you do a lot of rewatching, or what?

Re: the blind buy?

Personally, I buy both the books and the movies.  But visual entertainment, such as film and theater, I enjoy better, in most circumstances, though I will 9 times out of 10 prefer to read a book that a movie is based on before watching the movie.  I only buy DVD's that I can see myself watching again and again (because I love them so much) or that are priced around the same as they would be to rent anyway, and I know I'd want to watch them again.  I don't always have time to rent movies, but I like to pull out movies and watch them when I'm bored as opposed to TV or something.  There's a couple in my collection that I've largely ignored, but otherwise, I pull them out again every once and awhile.  I let people borrow mine too.  So, yeah.  I don't own them just to own them, though.  I own what I know I will watch.
