The Fountain

I love Darren Aronofsky's work.  I jumped into "Requiem for a Dream" because it looked interesting, and I was shocked by its emotional punch and stunning cinematography and score.  Later on, I watched "Pi," and it took me a few viewings before I liked it.  Once I did, I loved it for its frenetic pacing and daring story.  Hooked on his work, I patiently waited years until his third, and most dazzling film, "The Fountain," was released.

The trailer suggests nearly nothing about it, and the website is ambigious at best.  It's a thrilling story with dazzling cinematography and a haunting score.

"The Fountain" is easily one of the most creative and original films I have ever seen, and from opening to closing, this epic, yet intimate, film took me on a gorgeous mindblower that challenges, moves, and delights.

Three stories are happening simultaneously, with the same characters, and they all interweave to form an intricate pattern, or mosaic, of emotion and beauty.

It’s a powerful view of human mortality that’s both emotive and cerebral, and it also creates a tangible mood much like “Blade Runner” or “Fear & Loathing” does.

This film is more than a movie; it’s a work of art.   The rich cinematography, stellar acting, and haunting soundtrack create a living, breathing piece of art that continues to move and shift every time I see it.  It does what so few films can.  It moves, challenges and delights.

Extras I want:

  • A couple documentaries on its creation
  • Interviews with the cast
  • Interviews with the original cast (Pitt and Blanchett) and why it didn’t work out for them (that would be fun)
  • Interview with Clint Mansell and his collaboration with Mogwai to create the soundtrack
  • Interview with Darren Aronofsky
  • Original storyboards

Re: The Fountain

Nice group!  I haven't seen The Fountain yet, but am interested.  Also interesting that Bitt and Blanchett were originally attached to this film because they both ended up going on to be in Babel in the same year, right?  And I've heard these films have relatively similar themes.

Also you may not know this, but there is already a thread in another group that has been discussing this same issue.  http://www.spout.com/forums/8936/ShowThread.aspx

HA! I just used the word Criterionize a few minutes ago in another post and thought I'd made it up... oh well.

I agree with you on The Fountain - one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Personally I find it difficult to imagine the film being good with Pitt (who I'm neutral about) and Blanchett (who I dislike) but I'd still be interested in seeing it. Kinda like seeing Christopher Walken or Kurt Russel's Han Solo auditions or Eric Stoltz Marty McFly... morbid curiosity.

I'd also like to see the other Aronofsy films as well. Maybe a box set of the three...

Re: The Fountain

Aronofsky's first three films as a box set would be awesome.  Each one is so unique and brilliantly blazes a new trail that they all would deserve to be Criterionized.  Fortunately, though, both "Pi" and "Requiem" come with a lot of extra features so those will tide me over until the definitive editions are released (if ever).

Re: The Fountain

Your Criterion dreams may come true if Aronofsky has anything to say about it. Apparently he was less than pleased with Warner’s issue of the Fountain to DVD, feeling slighted that they skimped on the extras and declined on his offer to put a commentary on the disk. He is campaigning for Criterion to license a pressing of the film, fully loaded and including the commentary he wants to make. Aronofsky apparently would like the prestige of Criterion editions of Pi and Requiem for a Dream as well, though both have been given generous releases by Artisan.

Thanks for the info!  You're right about Pi and Requiem.  They surprisingly contain quite a bit of features for just a regular release.  I do admit, though, that the main reason I want those two Criterionized is for the bragging rights and prestige the collection carries.
