Filmspotting #163: Knocked Up / Bug
"Knocked Up," writer/director Judd Apatow's follow-up to 2005's hilarious "The 40 Year-Old Virgin," burdens its portly, uncouth leading man Seth Rogen with a formidable task -- the "Virgin" sidekick doesn't just have to carry a movie for the first time (granted, with the help of Apatow regulars Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill and Jason Segel, among others), he also has to convince the audience that his sexy, put-together co-star Katherine Heigl could actually find him endearing. Does Rogen (and Apatow) succeed? Can a comedy that features a group of buddies developing pink eye after farting on each other's pillows actually prompt use of the word "profound"? Adam and guest host Scott Tobias from The Onion AV Club have your answers... and discuss William Friedkin's wacked-out, minimalist new film "Bug" starring Ashley Judd as a lonely barmaid who falls for a creepy former soldier (Michael Shannon) and becomes convinced that her run-down hotel room is teeming with insects. If you've seen either film, please chime in with your thoughts!

Re: Filmspotting #163: Knocked Up / Bug
I thought Knocked Up was really funnny, and had profound parts at times as well. It reminded me of Clerks II in a way that there is pop culture humor (references to Spider Man 3, Munich, etc.), dick and fart jokes, and then has a dramatic side as well with Ben (Rogen) finally deciding to "grow up" and decide between responsibility of hanging out with his friends. It also was more relevent to me, because my wife is 8 months pregnant and a lot of the issues hit home.

Hey Adam, Halfway thru the episode as of this post....Great show as usual, but I wished I'd gotten to you before you and Mr. Tobias started recording....It's Katherine "High-guhe" not "Hey-guhle".... To parahrase Kevin Costner in Bull Durham, I hate it when people get name pronunciations wrong :-) But to be fair, you nailed my last name perfectly when I commented on a top 5ive list a few shows back...Really looking forward to seeing Knocked Up via your enthusiastic review... Kudos, Jeff (from The DVD Marquee) PS-Keep us posted on the new arrival!

Re: Filmspotting #163: Knocked Up / Bug
I haven't listened to this podcast yet, because I don't want you guys to give anything away (you sort of ruined The Namesake for me, due to your subtle yet reveiling message.) But, my 13 year old nephew saw Bug, and was bored within 20 minutes. Now that's something, that will keep me from paying $6.75 to see this movie. I'll most likely see Knocked up tomorrow though, can't wait to see it!

Say, Jeff, is there a typo in your pronunciation guide? Or is it really the case that the 'L' in the spelling 'HEIGL' doesn't contribute to the sound at all? ==Mitch

How did we sort of ruin the namesake?

Re: Filmspotting #163: Knocked Up / Bug
[SPOILERS (? -- FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM) DISCUSSED HERE] You didn't ruin it for me. I saw it and liked it tremendously. The three main "twists:" 1) death of the father, 2) end of the son's first romantic relationship, and 3) the affair were not really disclosed. Moreover, even if they had been the drama in the film comes not from the "shock" of these events, but rather from the manner in which the characters deal with them. No problems with your reviews. FWIW, I thought that Kal Penn didn't always quite carry his dramatic weight -- he needed a little more direction -- but he was generally pretty good. But virtually everybody else in the movie was fantastic. Hard to tell an intergenerational story across 2 continents any better than Mira Nair did in this film.

So it's still possible to see a movie for $6.75 somewhere?
