FilmCouch #47 - DEAR PILLOW, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
We interview Julian Schnabel, director of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, opening tonight. Karina and I cross wires on its watch worthiness. We also interview Brian Poyser, director of Dear Pillow. It's a complicated, divisive, raw look at porn leading Kevin and I into some verbal wrastlin'.

Re:FilmCouch #47 - DEAR PILLOW, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
Well, I got "Dear Pillow" yesterday (thanks for sending that, by the way!) and just finished watching it. The movie was pretty much one never-ending cringe for me. I felt so sorry for Wes. It seems like this movie is about not only pornography in its rawest form, but everything a teenager's learning experience with sex should not be. As stated in the podcast, Wes' questions about sex are questions most kids have about sex. It's just sad that he has them answered by people like Dusty and Lorna instead of his parents. As someone who had (and has) a close relationship with my parents, I always find it hard to watch somebody so isolated from and misunderstood by the people who should care the most about them. While I didn't think "Dear Pillow" was a well-made film, or a well-written film (the script is thin in several spots, mostly in the sections of dialogue between Wes and his dad), it does raise some good questions, and the possibility for excellent discussions. I'd love to watch this with a group of people from different backgrounds and get their reactions, as I'm sure they'd probably be pretty varied. Thanks again, guys, for sending me this DVD. It wasn't a pleasant experience (I'm pretty sure that's not the point of the film, in any case), but it was an interesting one.
