Lars Von Trier
I think Lars has a special place in the "Oh my gosh, I can't look at this," category. So here's a conversation devoted to him.

Re: Lars Von Trier
Dogville built me up so much into the idea of a beuatiful excepting place and then it just became a hell. I couldn't believe how quickly he cut the ground from underneath. I think that might be it. I haven't seen his others. I want to see dancer in the dark, but mainly because of bjork

Re: Lars Von Trier
I was also really blown away by the first 45 minutes of
Dogville
. I felt like I was watching a genius director at work. Then, as you say, he cut the ground out from beneath me, again and again. With
Dogville
and
Breaking the Waves
, I got to the point where I started to wonder why Von Trier kept allowing his characters to be brutalized again and again. When is enough? I think I've discovered that my gut-check line for when I've had enough violence is about half an hour before Lars Von Trier's.
Under discussion:
Breaking the Waves
(1996)
Dogville
(2003)
