Most are unsure if they liked it or they hated it.

First off, don't say how bad this movie is without seeing "Amorres Perros" and "21 Grams" first. They are all a part of this type of storytelling and the lessons to be learned with it. Now, with that being said, this is not a movie that you go into wanting to be mindlessly entertained. It's a deep story that will make you think, if you are willing. It shows how we have come to think we are different and yet we are all the same. We are all human and yet we all speak different languages, whether it be the way we think, the way we were raised or what language we are accustomed to. The deaf japanese girl is a perfect example. She gradually becomes desperate just so she can have a man touch her. But when they find that she cannot speak or hear they walk away. Then she just tries to give herself sexually to these older men but they will not because they no it is not right. It's an endlessly frustrating journey for her and she just wants to feel something. At the end, all of the characters have come closer to eachother than ever before because of this one shooting. Imagine trying to think up a story like this. There's so much emotion packed into this one film and it is done so in a way that speaks to the heart and mind. If you have not seen this movie then Stop Reading Right Now. Now, when the movie was over, a friend said everything seemed to be resolved for the characters except the japanese girl. I thought to myself, is that true. No, even though the girl did not have any sexual contact with anyone, there was something symbolic that happend on the last scene. I thought she was going to jump off her balcony but when her father saw her, he held her to comfort her. Now, from that scene, we know that she had her father's love, which will last forever without the trouble of these teens. As the camera moved slowly back, the director was saying,"That was just one story of these people out of these billions of other people. Now let's leave them in peace." This was just a glimpse of what happens everyday and how one seemingly small event can change all of these peoples lives. It's sad but it's still the truth. The camera doesn't look away for one second in all of these tragedies, as they unfold for the viewer to try to understand that these are everyday people dealing with eachother.  This is real and it's one group speaking to the world. We are all connected, no matter what our language is. We are all connected!

i saw all 3 of the above Alejandro González Iñárritu films ,i personally love Amores perros (2000),21 grams ,it was o.k. and as for Babel (2006),it was my least liked of the three.

Babel was a bit too long and too slow;( i get the meaning and the symbolism of the movie BUT the movie is still too long and drawn out) much prefer somethimg lighter like  Short Cuts (1993); Innaritu did executive produce a womens- like- version of short cuts(without the $20 bill being passed on) called Nine Lives (2005);i would like to see Nine Lives;Have u seen it??

If I rated the movies I've seen in the past year, Nine Lives would probably come out on top. (Didn't think of it as a woman's movie, though.) True drama.

Yes, Amorres Perros was fantastic and 21 grams could have been better. "Babel" was a very deep film and has been misunderstood by many and I see you are one of them as well. What did you not like about it? Haven't seen "Short Cuts" but I certainly would like to. "Nine Lives" was a wonderful film or should I say films. Which short stories were your favorites? Why? My favorite was the one were that woman bumped into her old boyfriend at the grocery. That was brilliant and she was incredible in that scene!

Oh also lukasblu, if you have ever seen an Ozu or an Ingmar film than you would think this film was moving at the perfect pace. You cannot judge a film based on how it's paced unless it moves slow for no reason at all or it moves too fast for no reason at all except to entertain the audience. Babel knew it's pacing style and it was used to fit the mood of the film which can turn off some interest in a lot of Americans today that are used to fast paced Hollywood movies.

can you recommend an ozu or and ingmar fave of yours???

i do watch some slow movies like Water by deepha metha and i watch a lot of movies by lars von trier(breaking the waves, dancing in the dark, dear wendy(not a long movie),dogville and my most recent fave of his is manderlay;although dogville was a wee bit better, mainly ,because of nicole kidman(her acting and appearance were much better than bryce dallas)

I need to watch Babel again.  I watched it on DVD while I was cleaning my kitchen.  I really liked it a lot, and I got the general gist of the film, but I need to give it a second viewing to really understand it.

As far as pacing is concerned, I didn't think it was particularly slow.  But then again, I didn't think Cache was slow and I can make it through most Jim Jarmusch films.
