The Mist...Has Come

All right.  So, it took me forever to see it but I finally saw The Mist!  Woo!  And, let me tell you...I'm not sure how to feel about it.  It was good, don't get me wrong, but something was...missing?  I think it was some of the plot that was missing, some of the scenes from the story that they left out.  Particularly the sex scene.  Hey!  Don't call me a pervert!  I know that's what you're thinking!  But, in the novella, there is a sexual encounter between David and Amanda (whose name might be different in the novella but I can't remember off-hand).  It's not graphic, but it just shows how weird people can get in a crisis.  Also, in the novella, David's wife doesn't show up in a spider web at the end.  They all just drive by the gravel road entrance and look sadly at the mangled house and David decides it's best not to risk it.  For all it's shortcomings, though, the movie was good.  And I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I could have done without the MP guy's body shattering and all the little baby spiders ooooooooozing out of him, but, hey, I'm not a director.  I thought that scene was just too disgusting...and, even though I don't hurt creepy-crawlies, they're still creepy-crawlies and they're still damn creepy.

So, in conclusion, if you haven't see it, you should.  It's worth it.  But, be prepared to be thoroughly depressed because, in this version of the story, there is no hope for our hero.  None.

I agree with you Froggy, one of the pivotal scenes in the book was the sex scene because that is what started ole crazy to say that they have sinned and they must kill the sinners.  I too was pretty depressed after it and had to watch a comedy when I got home just to feel better...sigh.  Anyway, it was good and Thomas Jane is still as hot as ever in my book.  whew...

You girls and your 'sex-scenes'...   Geez!   Is that all you ever think about?

I have yet to see this one but, I must admit, I coaxed Froggy into telling me all about it...  spoilers included.   Still, I look forward to seeing this as it sounds like a lot of fun and I have never met a Stephen King movie that I didn't like...  From the description, it sounds a bit like H. P. Lovecraft to me...

Oh yeah.   Froggy, you let slip with another spoiler there at the end, I think...   Sometimes a man fights at his best when there is absolutely no hope of survival...   remember  'The 13th Warrior'?

Yes, I remember The 13th Warrior as you've spoken much about it lately.  But this, really, has nothing, and I mean nothing, in common with it.  It's very different and really ironic, in fact.  And the spoiler didn't "slip," either...I meant to say it as it is part of the movie and, thus, part of the thread.  Don't want to see spoilers don't read.  Myah myah myah.  Cheers!

First of all i do believe that if you do plan on giving away spoilers you should say your going to have spoilers. It's just polite. I was really looking forward to the mist because i knew things had been changed but i didnt know what. Secondly i HATED the sex part in the book. ( I viewed it as a character flaw. And it really made me care less about David.) oh i love my wife, i love my wife. I hope she's ok, but let me put it in this chick instead. BLAH!!! They are also putting out the "Directors version" as well with the single disc the way they did 1408. It will be in black and white and be a slightly different cut. So you never know, the sex could be in that version. But i really hope it isnt.

I was the one who did the 'spoilers' thing and nobody has ever accused me of being 'polite' before...

Ok, let me just say; you put a huge spoiler in there, and since Stephen King said he would personally hunt down and punch anyone who gave away any part of the ending, i think you might have an ass-kicking headed your way.

But anyways...

I'm actually glad they left the sex scene out. It worked in the story, and is completely... well... understandable isn't really the right word, but it makes sense. In the movie, you don't have his inner monologue. All you'd have is this married guy having sex with someone NOT his wife while his son sleeps nearby. Sure, they're trapped in a grocery store and have no idea whats going on outside, but it's still a hard sell when you can actually read the guy's thoughts.

The whole point of the movie is that in the end, even those who seemed so righteous and pure, even the heroes, can turn out to be just as misguided as the apparent villains. If he'd immediately started having an affair before finding out what happened to his wife, he wouldn't have seemed so heroic.

Re:The Mist...Has Come

I think that Stephen King probably would forgive Froggy since she didn't tell EXACTLY what happened and poor Stephen King is so brittle now anyway that I think Froggy would have a pretty good chance in defending herself...

Anyway, I do agree with you that since he didn't have the inner dialogue in his head, it would have been hard to explain.  BUT I don't think that them having sex was even about SEX, it was about desperation and comfort and the need to be with someone because they were scared shitless.   I'm not saying it justifies anything but if I thought I was going to die in some horrible situation, I'd be seeking some extreme comfort myself.

SPOILER ALERT:  Okay, now, in the book didn't it just end with them driving off to try to find a place without the mist?  I can't remember.  But the movie...whew...yep, there was NO HOPE, no hope at all and he didn't even try to fight really, just gave up because they didn't want to become big bug food.
