Screams in the Movie Theater
In another discussion (Favorite Foreign Scary Movie), SkyPilot had mentioned that when watching The Orphanage there were some very high tension parts that almost made him want to scream (he did not scream but was thinking about it just to relieve tension). But we thought this might make another good discussion...Have you ever screamed OUT LOUD while watching a movie AT the movie theater. Was it the crowd in the theater that had you worked up and then when one person screams it makes everyone jump and scream? What movie made you scream and (without giving away Spoilers OR just saying it's a Spoiler before you post it) what part in the movie was it? And come on guys, you can confess it too, we won't make fun of you...hee hee...

SPOILERS! For some reason I can only think of a few moments that I have screamed out loud at the cinema. I know there has got to be a few more but this is for now. 1. ) Se7en - When the S.W.A.T. team enters the apartment of the Sloth victim and one of the officers shines a light into the (supposed) corpse which comes to life and begins to horrifically gasp for air and convulse: I screamed like no other and pretty much scared the **** out of all the people sitting around me. And this is sad to admit but, 2.) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - During the second challenge that takes place underwater, when Harry is about to free his friend and all of a sudden a Great White Shark charges the screen: I was kind of ignoring the film and laughing with friends about something unrelated and when I turned back to the screen I screamed unbelievably loud and literally made about a dozen little kids around me begin crying and their parents giving me the look of death. It doesn't sound scary but see below. Didn't see it in a theater (because I wasn't born yet) but, 3.) Jaws - Pretty much the whole movie made me scream out loud: the opening sequence, the first appearance of the shark, and the second, third and fourth, and when the shark eats Quint and charges the sinking ship. I hate Great White Sharks. A lot.

Re:Screams in the Movie Theater
Those were great, yes I remember that part in Se7ven, I think I yelped a little out loud too at that part. Scared the crap out of me. That part also startled me a bit in Harry Potter, hee hee, sorry, I just can't stop laughing because I can imagine all those kids crying and parents giving you the evil eye. That was like the time I saw E.T. in the movie theater and right at the part SPOILER: where E.T. is laying in the water all white and dying - everyone around is sniffling, etc. then my friend that I was with said something really hilarious and I started laughing. The whole friggin theater turned around to glare at me like I was a heartless witch. I was still in high school but I can't remember how young I was, but I was pretty embarrassed. Thanks for sharing that, Mercurial, that was really great!!!!

I hate Great White Sharks. A lot. Mercurial, this reminds me of when I saw Open Water with some friends including Spout member mattypro. I don't know if you have people like mattypro in your life; I'm usually bothered by people talking through movies, but mattypro is so funny I enjoy it. Anyway, I can't believe mattypro agteed to see Open Water because he hates all sharks, along with anything that looks like a shark and probably anything that rhymes with "shark." I remember when those harmless fish were eating the dead skin cells off of the people, mattypro kept screaming out things like, "OHMYGODPIRANHAS!" or "GET THOSE F***ERS AWAY!" As for me, I think I'm more frightened of whales than sharks. I know this isn't rational, that whales might even protect me from a shark, but ever since I was little boy I've been terrified of whales, especially the sperm whale and the blue whale. Did any of you guys collect Zoobooks? I still have the whale one, and some of those illustrations give me the chills every time I look at them. I've been known to let loose a little "ah!" if I come across a picture of a whale by surprise. To this day I get nervous watching the scenes with Monstro in Pinoccchio.

So do you find Star Trek IV to be a horror film? I wonder what you would think of Werckmeister Harmonies.

Ha! But seriously, whales floating in space gives me the creeps. Was that a motif in a comic book, maybe a Nintendo Power exclusive serial about Star Fox? The reference is rattling around somewhere in there. I'm going to take a deep breath and then click on Werckmeister Harmonies.

Wow, that looks really interesting. And I did get the chills just thinking about it, in case you were wondering.

Re:Screams in the Movie Theater
Well, I'm usually pretty good at not screaming in theatres, so I can actually only think of one instance(although a few more have gotten to me at home). It was during The Others, which I was actually reminded of several times when watching The Orphanage(I also thought about Poltergeist a lot, does anyone else see the similarities?). The one true 'scream inducing' moment in The Others, when the kids are hiding in the closet. I had my feet up on the seat in front of me, and I actually screamed and recoiled. But the theatre was empty, with only my brother and a couple a few rows ahead of us, so my scream was wasted.

Whale in space? Maybe you are thinking of Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Ha, I forgot about the whale suddenly falling through the air. But that's not it. I have the mental image of an illustrated whale. Maybe it was in a Marvel comic that took place in outer space (do Adam Warlock and Dr. Strange come across this?) or that Star Fox exclusive I was thinking of. Have whales ever been demonized or monster-ized in a movie (besides Pinocchio and Moby-Dick)?
