In Memorium...
I was saddened and shocked (!) to learn of the death of one of my FAVORITE actors of ALL time! I was even MORE shocked to learn that Roy Scheider was 75 when he died (!!!) ... (Oh My God.... has it really been that long!!!) ... When JAWS was released in the summer of '75 or '76... I can't remember which, and I was either 14 or 15, I went to the 'state of the art' giant screen theater on the other end of town... (using 'public transportation'...) ... To make a long story short, I have seen 'JAWS' 14 times in a row.... over 14 consecutive weekends! In the same giant-screen theater! Trust me, folks, For ME, that is a record... having PAID to see JAWS , in the theater, 14 times.... But I am not the only one to hold this record! My stupid cousin 'Ricky' did the same thing with me (!!!) .... Obviously, 'Chief Brody' stole the show in that one! And that was no easy task working against 'super-heavyweight' Robert Shaw in what was probably the best performance of his career! ... But I digress ... Roy Scheider was ALWAYS the epitomy of 'cool' in every movie I ever saw him in. And there were MANY! And many that were GREAT ones! Here is a PARTIAL listing of this man's amazing filmography... Naked Lunch (1991) * The Fourth War (1990) 52 Pick-Up (1986) 2010 (1984) *** Blue Thunder (1983) * Jaws 2 (1978) * Sorcerer (1977) ***** Marathon Man (1976) ** Jaws (1975) ***** The Seven-Ups (1973) * The French Connection (1971) *** This most amazing actor will be missed by me. I hope this list might inspire some of you to check out some really cool movies you have never seen before! Roy Scheider will live forever as long as there are movie fanatics like me running about! < GOR >

Re:In Memorium...
I will have to agree with you Mr.Gor. Roy Scheider had to be one of the best actors out there. But what sucks even more then his death is that it will only ever be a foot-note in the media. This is how i found out. (This is the news report.) "Roy Scheider died today in little rock, AK. He had been fighting cancer for the past two years." That was it, on the 11 o'clock news. no more has been said. So now i have to stop being sad about this tragic loss and get really pissed about coverage over some fuckheads who were to selfish with there lives and overdosed. These deaths were tragic as well (what death isnt? Well maybe OJ's when it happens) but to put so much time on them and leave other people out, it's just unfair. So as i sit here typing this i crack open a beer and i drink to the memory of one of the greatest actors who ever lived. Roy Scheider will be missed.

Re:In Memorium...
Ah, a sad day indeed Dr_Gor. Please don't forget Roy Scheider in Romeo is Bleeding ( although his part is not the largest, he does it with some real menace, the film is really superb, a fine example of Neo Noir, with great, great parts by everyone in it, especially Roy, Gary Oldman, Juliette Lewis, and Lena Olin ) He has a part in Klute and in Outside Man ( I have not seen Outside Man, but it sounds terrific ) that are worth noting. I second your beer and raise you a shot of Rye. Here is to you Roy. may we meet on the other side.

Re:In Memorium...
One can tell how much of a latter-day, modern movie watcher I mostly am because of how few of his films I'm familiar with and how well I know them. I know him best from Jaws (which I haven't even seen!) and Blue Thunder, but I've also seen Naked Lunch, Marathon Man and the French Connection. I think it's fairly clear how fickle and indescriminate the entertainment world and popular culture can be in that I hadn't even heard about it until yesterday, that it didn't seem to be a big news item and that only devoted fans of either Scheider or the film world in general would have known.

Well, there you have it, my fellow horrorphiles... Somebody who has never seen 'JAWS' ... And I think I can produce another one.... Froggy? ... would you like to say anything here? ...

I haven't seen the whole thing, no. But then again, I have no desire to. Like I've said before, I FEAR the water and I don't wish to have nightmares. But, thanks, anyway!

Re:In Memorium...to another one...
I read some where the other day of another passing, so I raise my tumbler of Don Eduardo Anejo Tequila to the sky and toast to Suzzane Pleshette's final journey. She already died the gruesome death in The Birds; one would think that would count as being quite good enough; like Robert Frost's, Fire and Ice; Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. Her outstanding, though unfortunately all too small role in the Birds is fondly remembered. As is the combination of smoldering beauty a unique blending of Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner and her dark intelligence, said much and was all too underutilized in the film world Fare thee well Suzanne.

Re:In Memorium...to another one...
It's sad to think that both of them are gone (and they weren't that old - for today's standards). Suzanne Pleshette's character in The Birds always made me so sad, a woman pining for someone she can never have but always having a little hope that it might happen one day...so pitiful. ugh. She was a great actress for drama and comedy. I also agree that Roy's death was just a footnote somewhere, I can't believe they didn't spend more time giving tribute to him. I would never have known that he died if Gor hadn't listed this memorium.
