Is 28 Days Later... a Horror?
Danny Boyle's are known to be psychologically claustrophobic and deal with addiction turning drugs into an abstract noun. After re-watching 28 Days Later… I couldn’t classify it. It starts off as with Sunshine in a broader state before ending up a struggle against other men instead of the original problem.
Stop me if I am giving Danny to much credit here or being largely pretentious but I think it doesn’t do justice to call it a horror.

I don't think your giving Danny Boyle too much credit, but I do think your not giving the horror genre enough. Your post implies that a horror movie can't have larger themes at work than just senseless murder. Certainly you would classify the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers as a horror movie even though it's possible that movie was about the dangers of McCarthyism(or communism, depending on your political views). The horror genre has always been a playground for filmmakers wanting to vent their political views or challenge the belief system of the audience. Also, as much subtext as there may be in 28 Days Later, it still exists very much within the horror movie mold. The only thing that seperates it from the zombie movies of old is the fact that, well, the zombies aren't dead. Also they run.

That argument is sound, I don't think there's anything more to say. There goes the thread!

Thank you for joining our humble group, MrSaturn, and welcome! I think TheWorkingDead stated it perfectly. 28 Days Later is 99.9% pure Horror Movie. There have been some interesting discussions on what, exactly, constitutes a horror movie in this group in the past. Check out the earlier discussions titled 'Is Planet of The Apes a Horror Movie?' and 'Is Deliverance a Horror Movie?'. There are others as well. Again, welcome aboard and have fun! < GOR >

Re:Re:Re:Re:Is 28 Days Later... a Horror?
Perfect! I love discussing the dramatic and horror-related depths of this movie. I do think "28 Days Later," based on the subject matter, is a horror movie. However, I think that because of the themes and situations it deals with, namely survival, relationships and how far you go to protect yourself and the people you care about, it is a very different kind of horror movie. All the really good horror filcks, in my opinion, go two routes: you have the campy movies that make fun of the genre while still delivering a few good shivers ("Slither" or the "Evil Dead" trilogy). On the other hand, there are the films that have something to say beneath all the fake blood and dead bodies. "28 Days Later" falls squarely in this category. If you want another good example of a thoughtful scary movie, check out "Shallow Grave," another of Danny Boyle's movies. I've seen this one classified as horror too, but I think its' "horror filmyness" is a bit more debatable than "28 Days Later."

Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Is 28 Days Later... a Horror?
So far no one has even mentioned George Romero's movies. Everyone of his horror movies have had very deep themes dealing with the time's. To say that any horror movie's are just horror movie's is pretty naive. All movies especially horror have always had some sort of social commentary hidden at the core. Granted, some movies you really have to look for it but in others it just smacks you in the face. 28 day's later falls in the last of those, it's all about the dangers of chemical warfare and disease. Like mad cow, and other's of that nature. Take Night of the living dead, who would actually want to go see a movie about racial tension and the space program and learn??? but you lock people in a house, throw a crap-load of zombies at them, mix in these points and people flock to the theater and in the process they pick up these themes. Pretty tricky if you ask me. But then again, i could be way off base on any of my assumptions..

I just love how you start watching a film about a man in his struggle against millions all over London and you finish with his struggle against (I believe) six in a small mansion. The claustophobia.

Re:Is 28 Days Later... a Horror?
Yes, I know we have discussed what constitutes a horror movie before, there are some movies that I don't even think of them as horror movies but some of my friends are terrified to watch them. It's like Jaws, I don't even slightly consider that a horror movie but I have a friend that practically has a heart attack when watching it. OR the Wizard of Oz, I never even slightly thought this movie would fit in the horror genre but I have friends that still can't watch it because of those cute little flying monkey's and that misunderstood crabby green witch. I think a horror movie is many different things to different people, it's whatever scares the crap out of you. Some can be extremely sophisticated with strong political or social issues associated with it, OR they can be as scary as a zombie and shark having a fight underwater or a man in a hockey mask hacking people up. Different strokes for different folks.

Hello, Miss June, and welcome back ! It is funny that you should mention JAWS and The Wizard Of OZ , as those are two of my favorite Horror Movies! Yes, those movies not only qualify as 'horror' but they fucking ROCK! If you have ever been swimming in the ocean, or if you even imagined it, then JAWS has had an impact on your life... As for The Wizard Of OZ , I cannot think of too many things that are scarier than a Wicked Witch, who is all green and covered in warts, who is in complete command to her armed soldiers AS WELL AS Her 'back-up' army of 'flying monkey-bat thingies' ! Yeah, that movie has been giving me nightmares for about 40 years.. ever since I first saw it !
