Alfred Hitchcock

They are having a sort of Alfred Hitchcock marathon (or something like a marathon) going on the AMC channel. I have always loved the movies he directs and I also love the old television series. What are some of your favorite episodes, movies?

I was just watching Rear Window again for the millionth time. I absolutely love that movie. I love the way we get a glimpse into peoples lives just through their windows. The suspense in that movie is really great, especially when Grace Kelley gets caught in the killer's apartment...

"Rear Window" is a GREAT film! I will not go into detail and spoil it for all of our 'youngsters' here...

My favorite Hitchcock movies would be ;

1. "Psycho"

2. "The Birds"

3. "Rear Window"

4. "Dial M..."

5. I can't remember the name but it is that one he did at the end of his career.... the one with Karen Black....

"Family Plot" or something like that...

Yes, those have to be my favorite in that order too. I just watched Family Plot again last night I think it was on around midnight, you are right Gor, it is the one with Karen Black. That is one of the only movies I was kind of hoping the lead woman (the "psychic" would get killed, she was so friggin annoying). The Birds is such a Fun film, I love the subtle humor in it AND I think one of my favorite parts is on the jungle gym, that was pretty cool. I got a little freaked out here a couple of days ago when I saw this HUGE FLOCK of Ravens flying over my apartment building, I have NEVER seen so many. It made me a little nervous.

Of course I also love North by Northwest and I LOVE Notorius - Cary Grant was one of the most handsome, debonaire men that has ever lived. I hear that Alfred Hitchcock was actually friends with Cary Grant, even though he HATED most actors and actresses.

I've never felt like Hitchcock did me wrong (except maybe with 'Topaz'...not so good). 'Rear Window' I watch, literally, probably 6 times a year. I love the self-containment of it. You feel like you're actually kind of hanging out with Jimmy S. in his apartment, and that's an idea I can really support. Speaking of Jimmy, some respect has to be shown to 'Vertigo'. I've read some "it's overrated" talk on some other groups here, and that's crazy talk to me. Completely realized, dark and mysterious as the professor of Dark And Mysterious Things at Psychological Suspense University, 'Vertigo' is, categorically, The S h i t.

'North By Northwest' was my first Hitch film, so it'll always have a soft spot for me, and I find it highly rewatchable and entertaining. In much the same way that divinemsjunebug mentioned the class of Cary Grant, the same has to be said for Grace Kelly. Eternally stunning and smart.

How about a (slightly) under-rated Hitchcock? 'Rope'. It takes place in real time over 90-odd minutes, and is a great example of black comedy and, if you want to go a little deeper with it, social commentary. It's not perfect, but Stewart, Farley Granger, and John Dahl are more than worth a watch.

Oh, and speaking of Mr. Granger: 'Strangers On a Train'. Greatness.

Does ANYONE really have a catalogue of films as full as Hitchcock's with as much consistent quality? Not that I can think of...
