They Creep Up On You...

I think the creepiest damn things EVER in movies are bugs.  Not only are they creeptastic in real life, but they are UBERnasty in movies.  For the instance, the most obvious example, Bug.  Super-insect roaches that light stuff on fire and hide on your phone so they can burn your face off...how crappy is that?  There have also been ticks and mosquitos, to name a few.  Leeches and slugs aren't really bugs (rhyming is fun!) but they are still creepy, too.  So, how's about it?  Anybody have any creepy-crawly movies in mind you'd like to chat about?

I'm trying to think of a horror movie that was strictly about insects that actually got under my skin and made my toenails curle, but nothing is coming to mind.  Although, the newer version of King Kong really made me mentally freak out with the entire huge below ground bugs.  I literally had to shake that nasty feeling off.  I guess it was more effective since it was unexpected, as well as the fact that you were able to get into the emotional setting because the movie was already very dramatic and all.  Hmm... I still can't think of any actual horror movies that had bugs that creeped my out and made my skin crawl.

There is the whole science fiction category referred to as "bug movies." Startship Troopers and, yes, Alien, for example. And Mimic for that "humanoid cockroach in the subway" vibe.

My second scariest movie as a kid was Them!

Or are you looking for non-science fiction, plain old bugs? Lots of spider movies (not counting Spider), but they're more fun than scary. And centipedes running up legs. Centipedes seem popular in Japanese and drug-induced-hallucination movies.

And then my most disturbing childhood movie: The Naked Jungle. Are ants bugs?

Also, the Herbie movies.

And... uh oh. There goes one now. What was that? A mouse or a gigantic roach? Got to clean up the kitchen...

"Starship Troopers" obviously had some of the nastiest bugs ever dreamed up in an alcohol and drug fueled hallucination.    I think spiders are probably the worst and in that vein, I would list "Kingdom Of The Spiders" , starring one of my all time favorite actors, William Shatner!     I thought 'Shelob' in "The Lord Of The Rings" was pretty nasty as well.   But if 'creepy crawlies' really bother you, then I would recomend the grand-daddy of them all...   "Frogs"!   And, no, this movie is not just about frogs but spiders and snakes and various other creepy crawlies as well...

All of those movies are very good and creepy as well as Arachnaphobia - it made my skin crawl a LOT but I think one of the worst movies that made me hide my eyes (and I love a lot of gorey movies and never hide my eyes) BUT that movie was Creepshow when they had the ROACH segment about the horrible mean man in the extremely clean white apartment and the roaches took REVENGE (especially the blender part)....shiver, shiver, shiver....

I had read in a review somewhere that "Bug" was a play. I would love to see that on stage. How awesome would that be?

"Arachnophobia" freaks me out, too. The shower scene, especially. What is it with movies using shower scenes for ultimate scares? I guess it's just the vulnerability you have when you're taking one.

Just to clarify, the Bug your talking about is more recent. The one with Ashley Judd, right? The one originally referenced is the mid-seventies, more literal bug movie.

I was actually listening to the William Shatner album Has Been as I was reading that!

Yes it was written by Tracy Letts from Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre.

Yeah, I guess I got confused, there. Thanks for the clarification, WorkingDead.
