The Exorcist
Ok, so Dr. Gor is always talking about how The Exorcist is his favorite movie and it's also the graphic for this group, and it is also often referred to as the scarriest movie of all time in several places. So I saw it for the first time two nights ago. I thought I'd be alright. After I saw it I went to take a short nap. I didn't want to go to bed yet because I still had some stuff to take care of, dishes and other stuff. I always do this though. I try to take a small nap and set my alarm for just a half hour, but then I end up just hitting the snooze so long that I end up sleeping the whole night. Well this time when I woke up after a half hour or so I had all kinds of weird freaky images going through my head whenever I'd close my eyes. So I had to end up going to the couch and watching more TV to fill my head with other items for a while. I saw an episode of Friends, which was actually more disturbing in a different way. So anyways, yet I guess it was pretty freaky. I'm going to watch it again with commentary, but I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the signifcance of all the actor and movie reference type stuff was. Was it supposed to be some metaphore or parallel to the posession theme? I'm speaking specifically about the fact that the main character was a famous actress and there were scenes on a movie set and there was a director character. And Cobb's character would often ask people if they wanted to come out and see a movie with him, but the movie was always some classic story with actors who would probably never have actually played those parts. Well what's the deal with this?

Re: The Exorcist
I am so glad you enjoyed the movie, Rizzo! Which version did you watch? The 'original' or 'the version you've never seen'? Either way, it is the same movie and it is quite exceptional! To tell you the truth, I never thought much about the significance of the whole 'movie making' theme within the movie.... I was too busy being terrified! ... interesting!

Wow, Rizzo, that is interesting, I like how your brain works. Very cool. I have the DVD but have never watched the commentary, I ought to do that. The Exorcist is one of my favorite movies too. I like how it starts when everything is just so subtle and then her mom takes her for all these medical tests, etc. and then BAM! Even though it's over 30 years old, it's still one of the scariest movies ever. June

Re: The Exorcist
I think I watched "the version you've never seen". It actually says "the restored version" on my DVD. The legth was 2:11 if that helps. I'm wondering if Friedkin was trying to make some comment about the way movies are made. Who knows. Was all of the stuff that I mentioned about movies within the movie also in the original novel? You know what was the absolute most disturbing part for me? When they gave her that spinal tap or whatever. The doctors shoved that thing in her neck and the blood kept spurting out in a regular pulse. Uh, the part when she came down the stairs on her hands and feet upside down with the blood coming out of her mouth was pretty fucked too though. The truth is most of the freakiest parts I had already seen or heard about somewhere else in clips or pictures or other references. So there were actually few surprises. Except for the SPINAL TAP EW!

Re: The Exorcist
I think that is what my DVD says too, I need to go through all my DVDs and get rid of some that I never watch so I can find ones I want to watch over and over. Anyway, Eeeeew, I know what you mean, those were two of my freak out scenes too. The spinal tap made me cringe all the way to my toes and back up again. ugh. The stair scene was just classic, shiver. I still have to close my eyes when the green pea soup is spewing, ick.

Re: The Exorcist
There was something both very goofy about many parts and very scary. I don't know if the goofiness was due to it actually being goofy, seeming goofy because of something about the history of horror movies since, or because of the fact that the movies has been parodied so many times. I found most of the swearing coming from the evil voice from the girl to be rather humorous. Maybe because in the improv world I hear so much swearing and associate it with comedy. Hard to say. Somehow I find something to be much more dangerous and evil when it can refrain from outbursts and anger and swearing. Swearing seems out of control which can be scary. But something calculated can seem much more frightening.

Re: The Exorcist
It would appear that you were fascinated by this movie if nothing else, Rizzo! Excellent! My work here is done! The version you guys saw was the 'restored' or 'director's cut', which was released a few years ago as "The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen". This version contained extended 'medical examination' footage and an extended ending and, of course, the infamous 'spider walk' down the stairs which was cut from the original 'theatrical' version.... The reason they cut it, was because they didn't feel Ellen Burstyn could pull off a strong enough reaction to this scene, coming immediately on the heels of her being told of the death of Burke Dennings, the 'director'... And yes, Rizzo, the characters were the same in the novel... Also of note, as I mentioned to June earlier, the catholic church was highly involved in the making of this movie! There were a couple of high ranking Priests on hand as 'technical consultants' to ensure that the exorcism rituals etc. were as acurate as possible! One priest even had a small role in the film! Re: The Exorcist
Something I mentioned a while back that bears repeating here... My FAVORITE movie line of all time! It is during the 'meaty' part of the exorcism when 'Reagan' says to Father Merrin... "Shove your c**k up his ass, you motherfucking, worthless cocksucker!" (*I censored myself there to prevent the SPOUT GODS from doing a worse job!*) To which Merrin replys, "BE SILENT!" and splashes her with 'holy water'... The first time I saw that, I thought "Damn! That little girl talks like me!"...

Re: The Exorcist
off topic, but just to say, I posted the movie quote "The hen pecks the c**k to make him crow." without the asterisks and came back later to find that i should have used "rooster." How come you can get away with all those other words there?

This subject has been brought up before... by ME! In fact, I think I might be the one who brought this to everyones attention very early on! I think it has something to do with my rather lax use of the english language! Hey! I didn't even go to high school! <<< 'caveman', remember? ... Anyhow, they have a simple program to detect certain 'key words' like *** and pussy and *** and shit but they cannot detect those words when lengthened or combined with other words! For instance, you CAN say *** or cocksucker ... or even fucking... but you can't say *** or ***! ... I am probably going to get into trouble (AGAIN) over THAT post...
