Horror Movies Based on Real Events

So what are some horror movies that were supposedly based on REAL events?   How drastically did they change the movie to make it more exciting or scary?

I know that the Exorcist was suppose to be based on a real story - but I think in the real events it was a boy that was possessed and I don't think any priest died.

Amityville Horror was suppose to be based on a true story but now I hear George Lutz is denying everything now.

I thought Hostel was also based on a true story.   Anyway, what are some others that you know of?

Maybe even discuss movies that you hope to GOD are not based on true events but you could see it happening in real life.   Identity could be based on a true story...Shadow of a Vampire could be real if an actor really thought they were a vampire.  And if you believe in ExtraTerrestrials (I don't know if I spelled that correct) Signs could be true...

I am probably just posting because I am very hyper right now.  I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep for a while, I had way too much caffeine today plus watching the Descent...  Anyway, if these sound really stupid, please ignore me... hee hee.

Thank you for your post, June!   Yes, you are correct about "The Exorcist" !   Also, during filming, they had a couple of high-ranking Catholic Priests on hand as 'technical consultants' to make sure that the exorcism rituals, etc. were as true to life as possible!   I believe one of them even acted in the movie!   I have not yet seen "Identity", but "Shadow Of A Vampire" was very interesting!   I have read that 'Max Schreck', the actor who played "Nosferatu" was a very mysterious person indeed!   'Schreck' means 'terror' in German, I believe....

Many of my favorite 'Horror Movies' have been based on actual Serial Killers!   I will not start listing movies here as there are just too many!   But some infamous murderers who have been immortalized in film include:   Jack The Ripper,  Henry Lee Lucas,  Charles Manson,  John Gacy,  The Green River Killer,  The Zodiac Killer  and, of course,  Ed Gein!   (for more on this please see the following discussion...      HORROR MOVIES 101's Discussions - Hannibal Lecter vs Norman Bates - Spout) ...   Also, I mentioned before in a different group, the original "Dirty Harry" was actually based on "The Zodiac Killer" case!   Few people know this...

"True Ghost Movies"  actually scare me quite a bit!   Movies that claim to be 'factual' such as "Amityville Horror"  and  "The Legend Of Hell House" , etc.  ...   well, let's just say that I can see these kinds of things actually happening!   The reason for that is because I have actually SEEN 'Ghosts' !   More than one!   It is a long story! ...

As for 'Extra Testicals' ... I believe that Chuck Norris has some! ...   Oh, wait!   You were talking about 'Aliens'... Yes, I believe in this, as well...

You are just full of amazing trivia.  I didn't know they actually had priests that were technical consultants on the Exorcist, I would have thought the Catholic Church would have stayed WAY away from the movie.  That is pretty cool.  I've also read that about Max Schreck, he was definately an interesting person.  He was quite the method actor.

Re: Horror Movies Based on Real Events

I sent the last message too soon when my 20 pound cat jumped up on me and scared me to death.  Maybe she was reliving the Legend of Hell House for me.  hee hee.

There have been several movies based off of Ed Gein - I know that Texas Chain Saw Massacre was suppposed to be based off of his life but actually didn't really have anything to do with the real story.

I love Ghost stories, the spookier the better.  I have decided to join a ghost hunting group, it's a lot of fun and good exercise too.  I really don't know what I believe but I would really like to have real proof of life after death.  I'd really like to hear about your experience sometime with the real thing.

The exorcist was very loosely based around true events but william peter blatty completely rewrote the story to make it fictional and easier to sell.  You are also correct that the story it was based on did occur with a boy and not a girl.  I believe it was showtime about 6 or so years ago that did a made for their network movie called possessed not the one with leslie neisen and linda blair .  It was actually really good but will never hold up to the exorcist .  I do know the amityville house exists, well theyve torn it down now , and was supposed to be based on true events but there really is no truth to back it.  Henry portrait of a serial killer is based on true events. And of course lets not forget ed gein's influence in the texas chainsaw massacre.  As far as other movies that are based on true event, I think every horror movie is in some shred based on some sort of life experience or stroy someone told someone else that this or that happened to. Be it urban legend or not , there is always someone who belives it.

Re: Horror Movies Based on Real Events

Oh Lord, I totally forgot about Leslie Nielson's and Linda BLair's movie Repossesed.  That could be in the Funny Scary movies discussion.  But that was just plain silly, nothing remotely scary about it.  Leslie Nielsen Cracks me up in anything he is in.

I lived in New York for a couple of years as a nanny about 19 or so years ago.  My friends and I decided to take a drive to see the house.  At that time the yard was all grown over with weeds and there was a TON of grafitti on the side of the house.  A lot of it were stupid things like Satan Rules and pentagrams everywhere and of course Kelly loves John, etc.  lol.  I didn't get any heebie Jeebies looking at the house, but it was pretty cool to see it.

You know, of all the horror movies I have seen, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer was the MOST disturbing to me.  I can see Hostel a lot of times but I just can't watch Henry again (I don't know if it's too realistic or what the deal is).

There was another movie about Ed Gein that was more true to life that was really good.  I can't think what the name of it was.  It just showed him as your average every day man with a secret obsession, I need to see if I can find that movie (I think I own it), it was a good one.  It wasn't Ed and his Dead Mother was it? Or was that the funny one where she died and kept losing her body parts when she sneezed, etc.? Now I'm getting things all mixed up.  Okay, I think it's about time for me to go to bed.

Dude, this is probably like the tenth time you've mentioned that you've had experiences with ghosts on this site, but every time you say something like "it's a long story" or some such.  When are you actually going to tell the story!?

I do not believe that I have mentioned this 10 times!   Maybe 4 or 5 !   But the reason is this...   Certain "Horror/Ghost" movies scare me to no end!   And, that is simply because I have "been there and done that"...   as I said... it is a VERY LONG story!   ... AND I am not a very good 'typist' .... if you send me an e-mail I will save your address and I will send you my story....  it is a LONG one!
