See it on stage, not film
I've only heard bad things about this movie...not that The Fantasticks
is bad, but because this was created to be a PLAY not a movie. Of
course, there are a lot of musicals that have been turned into movies,
and many of them have transferred just fine. But part of the magic of
this show is its constant Brechtian conceits (more difficult to do on
film, I think), references to the theatre world, and low-budget set.
Has anyone seen the movie as well as staged performance? I'd like to
hear some comparisons and contrasts.
For those interested, I'm playing the mute in Heritage Theatre Group's
production this summer. We run in a rep. schedule, so performances are
scattered about, but if you're interested, contact me and I'll get you
the dates. (Or post the confusing schedule here...just let me know.)
PS: Another turn-off for me is who plays Matt in the movie. It's the New Kid on the Stage, Joey McIntire.
