Top 5 EVER
Ok, there's no way I can come up with my top 5 ever offhand, but from what I've been hearing about this film, I can't believe I've never heard of it.
Has anyone seen Madame de... (1953)?
After reading this post, I'm wondering if I've been in a hole my whole life.

Yeah, Paul, how dare you even ask for top 5 ever? Anyways, I'm going to try. But this list changes every 5 minutes. And Paul, I think you need to give it a try. And these are my favorite films. not films i would qualify as the top 5 best ever made. just my top five favorites.
1. The Rules of the Game 2. 8 1/2 3. All The Real Girls 4. The Royal Tenenbaums 5. The New World Ahem. i'm embarassed now. 3 of my top five are in the last 10 years.

Hey Paul - I've seen the Earrings of Madame de... by Max Ophuls and I liked it a lot - it has all those great Ophuls' qualilites - sweeping camera movements, symetrical shots, oppulaent sets.... I gave it an 8 out of 10 - I prefered Ophuls' great Lola Montes, La Rhonde, and Letter from an Unknown Woman to Madame de....I believe I saw all of them through the GRPL's great video library - you should check it out.

Re: Top 5 EVER
I really like your inclusion of The Graduate. Not just because of that amazing photo on the poster of Anne Bancrofts leg and nylon with a young dustin hoffman caught bewildered. But more because The Graduate is one of the classic coming-of-age tales. The older man puts his arm on thte young man's shoulders as if to tell him the secret to life and says . . "Go into plastics." A classic line which captures just how difficult it is for the young man to become a man. A fine movie!
