Best Film in Which Satan Appears as a Character
2. The Stand -- haven't seen it in a decade, but it's stuck with me. Anyone seen it lately? Does it hold up? I'm almost afraid to find out.
1. The Devil's Advocate -- over-the-top at times, but it boasts some scenes of tremendous insight, and maybe the best role Keanu's ever had.
Weird, I thought I could come up with more good films, but I'm mainly thinking of disappointing movies: End of Days, Constantine, and I don't know if the Devil shows up in Dogma because I found it so boring I couldn't make it past the first twenty minutes. I haven't seen Pick of Destiny yet. I will never watch Little Nicky.

Spoiler Alerts --- Spoiler Alerts -----
The Masque of Red Death - I don't know if you actually see him on screen, but he is definately a main presence.
The original Heaven Can Wait - Don Ameche meets a very congenial "His Excellency" Satan and explains his life story to him.
Rosemary's Baby - Satan gets his groove on with Sinatra's (then) girlfriend
Barton Fink - Is John Goodman the prince of darkness?
Legend - Tim Curry like you've never seen him before

Re: Best Film in Which Satan Appears as a Character
I know what my #1 pic is, no doubt about it
1. The Devil and Daniel Webster. (1941)
No doubt about it. I read this short story (at the book store whe you work while you were working actually, Adam) and I loved it. I saw the movie and I loved it. It's one of my absolute favorite movies of all time actually. Walter Huston is so compelling as The Devil, Mr. Scratch. The final shot of him noticing the viewer at home and coming towards the camera gives me wonderful goosebumps!
I don't know if I can make a decent top 5 list out of this either.
Jason, I liked the suggestion of Barton Fink. I'm not sure if Charlie Meadows is Satan himself, but he definitely represents some kind of Hell on earth.
I would also like to mention Dirty Work, which is a fairly funny movie where Adam Sandler has a quick cameo as The Devil.
And also Fatty Drives the Bus, since I'm currently taking classes with Mick Napier and it is pretty entertaining in a very unusual way. Read the synopsis to this film. The first line of dialogue in the film is one of Satan's servants coming to him while he is sitting on his thrown. I don't remember the exact phrasing, but the servent holds out a box of donuts to Satan and says, "Good Morning Satan, would you like a donut?" And Satan's response is of course, "Shut the *** up."

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Rizzo on The Devil and Daniel Webster - great movie and Walter Huston's portrayal was so good it made me want to watch more of work.

Jack Nicholson has a good over-the-top angry scene as Satan in The Witches of Eastwick. De Niro has a creepy Satan bit in Angel Heart. Little NIcky: funny movie.

Re:Best Film in Which Satan Appears as a Character
I'm very surprised no one has mentioned O Brother, Where Art Thou? It's pretty obvious in that one... Another that I would like to throw out there is Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. It's a bit of a stretch, but there are a few scenes where I truly belive him to be the anti-Christ...even though that's not the greater picture in the film. And hey...what about Will Ferrell as the devil trying to reap Garth Brooks' soul in the SNL skit? That just might be my favorite... And you can never forget the openly gay Satan in the South Park Movie. One of the funniest films ever made, by the way.

Re:Best Film in Which Satan Appears as a Character
Just a real quick rundown of the top five Devils:
5. Bedazzled
Peter Cook is great as the Devil, who seems to have been reduced to petty annoyances because the modern culture has already made the world a living Hell.
4. The Exorcist
Even without the director's cut, the Devil is even more evil with the face of a cute girl and the voice of Father Damien's mother.
3. The Prophecy
Viggo Mortensen's screen time is very limited but in many ways the most frightening of all the evils in the movie.
2. Angel Heart
De Niro is very effective as the manipulative Lou Cypher.
1. The Omen
Why are evil children always creepier that evil adults I don't know. But this kid gives me the willies every time I watch it. Why Gregory Peck ever trusts him is beyond me.
