top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kid

1. Dumbo (the pink elephants on parade made me run out of the room in fright. It is my earliest childhood memory)
2. Return to Oz (That crap'll give you nightmares)
3. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (It's all disturbing plus my sister taught me to fear little people)
4. E.T. (His freaky glowing heart, that awful noise he makes, I hate E.T.)
5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (The bad guy at the end with the high voice and eyeballs that turn into knives)

Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kid

This is a great topic. I have so many but here's 5.

1. The Peanut Butter Solution (read my blog)
2. Little Monsters (Dude, there were monsters.)
3. The Burbs (I didn't know it was a comedy back then. it scared the crap out of me)
4. The Lady and the Tramp (for the "We are Siamese if you please" scene alone. That still gives me the chills)
5. Pinnoccio (when they turn into asses and get whiped and sold into slavery).

But moose, your list is pretty good. on the thought of Dumbo, how did you like the heffalumps and woozles song on whinne the poo? Yeah that was scary too.

Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kid

Since this is about admitting silly movies scared you as a kid, I can totally offer up some options.  I had a very overactive imagination and was very suggestable as a child.  Now, four out of five of these movies are some of my favorites of all time, though.

1. Gremlins - The bad gremlins were scary and gross, ok?  It was very traumatizing to see cute Gizmo and his friends transform into those nasty little devils.

2. Return of the Jedi - Jabba the Hutt scared the crap out of me as a child.  I saw this on my birthday in the theater and the big laugh scared me.  I wasn't too fond of his pet rancor either.  I got over it after the first viewing, but it was major at the time.

3. Ghostbusters - When Dana Barrett and Louis Tulley change into the keymaster and the gatekeeper (ok, so, she's a dog) and go stand in front of Gozer's big gate, I was not happy about it.

4. The Wizard of Oz - The Wicked Witch of the West is awful!  I grew out of it, but she's not nice.

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - Again, it was all in once scene: Belloch opens the Ark, and his and the ***' faces melt.  C'mon, that was pretty gross and scary wrath of God stuff!  I didn't handle Temple of Doom too well either with all the creepy crawlies and monkey's brains.

Yeah Willy Wonka, the part where they ride that boat through the tunnel and Wilder sings that freaky song and there's all kinds of disturbings images projected up on the wall.

I remember when I was a kid, Judge Doom scared the crap out of me when he turned into a cartoon as well.  Now Roger Rabbit is one of my all time favorite films.

Tmoney, I just read your blog on The Peanut Butter Solution.  That does sounds like one of the freakiest things around.

I was totally frightened of black wolves in movies.  So I would always run out of the room when the wolf parts would come on in Benji the Hunted or The Neverending Story.  The most chilling part of Benji was when Benji tricks the wolf into running off of that cliff to his demise.  The wolf howl haunted my nightmares.

I think it was Superman III.  There was some part with a giant computer that would grab people and turn them into evil androids.  I caught that on TV once and couldn't get the terrifying image out of my head.

I think I was fairly young when I saw the Jaws movies as well.  The part in Jaws 3 when all the people get sealed in that transparent underwater tube system was the most unsettling part.

Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kid

I suppose I should explain links since the question was raised. While writing your post, highlight a film title, click the button that has a little chainlink graphic with a globe behind it (what does that mean?),  then copy and paste the URL of the film's page on Spout into the box that drops down. Whenever you link to a film in a discussion or a blog post, it will show an excerpt of what you wrote on the film's page. Nice, eh?

Alright, I take my Spout Customer Care shirt off. Scary as *** movies....

1) Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid. There's just nothing more scary than truly being stuck in a nightmare. A nightmare with a Snake-man.

2) The trailer for House. A skull with bat wings flew right at me from the TV late one night and I couldn't sleep for two days. I really couldn't. I cried.

3) E.T. - The screeching in the cornfield and crane neck was bad enough, what when he passed out next to that stream and turned into a raw slab of beef, I couldn't take anymore.

4) Superman III - ditto on the giant computer wrapping people in wires and turning them into robots. Robots with SILVER EYES!!!

5) The Wiz - Oh yay! Michael Jackson in a movie! (This is shortly after the Thriller album came out.) That flick was messed up. The creepy tiled parking garage where the support columns break out with arms and start chasing Diana Ross and MJ. Freaky deaky.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Superman III!  That robot wrapping part totally scared me.  Way more than Jabba the Hutt.  I second that.  Put that on my list instead of Jedi.

E.T. didn't really scare me as much as it disturbed me and made me cry.  I felt bad for E.T. and cried a lot when I watched him turn into a slab of beef and also when he was dying and Gertie was crying.  Hell, I still cry a lot when I see that movie.  Just one reason why Spielberg made my top 5 directors.

From another generation, here are 4 that gave me the creeps and nightmares and generally scared the bejezzus out of me;

Invaders from Mars

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The day the Earth Stood Still

The Quatermass Xperiment ( the Creeping Unknown )

Re: My Top 5

1. The Blob
The scene where the blob has an old man's hand engulfed in it's suffocating mass of death gave me childhood nightmares. Although Steve McQueen rocks in this one, "CO2!"

2. War of the Worlds
The original version: I woke up sweating one night in my bunkbed...I swear I saw one of the three-eyed death machines hovering in my bedroom.

3. It's Alive
A claw hanging out of a baby basket? 'Nuff said.

4. A Nightmare on Elm Street
The original Freddy Krueger...mustn't sleep...must...stay...awake...

5. The Amityville Horror
Consider buying an older home? Make sure there were no brutal murders there in the recent past...

Re: My Top 5

1. Superman 3- I didn't think that would end up being a common fear but yeah the machine swallowing the old woman and making her freaky about did me in.

2.Willy Wonka- The nervous breakdown on the boat- too out of left field.  Thats when I figured Willy was messing with stuff I didn't want to know about.

3. Evil Dead 2- I watched it when I was 11or 12 because at that point I thought I was impervious, but the laughing deer head got me bad.

4.Mr. Boogedy (sp)- it was a Disney thing on ABC when I was very small.  My parents let me watch it after they made me promise it wouldn't scare me.  I don't think I've ever told anyone that it actually freaked me out.

5. Dark Crystal- Eye-popping old lady + Giant Beetles= one squirming kid

close 6. The Secret of Nimh- because the great owl for some reason has wierd demon eyes and crunches on live animals (I know owls do that, but come on!)
