Overrated actors
Well, this is a list that could go on forever (I freely admit that I had written off Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson long before both of them gave the general public lots of reasons to do the same), but I just thought to start this thread because I just read the headline "Nicolas Cage plans to cut back on acting" (full story at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061210/ap_en_ce/people_cage_6) and my first thought after "this is news?" was the urge to send him a thank-you card. Don't get me wrong - Nic Cage has been in LOTS of movies that I enjoy and even a few that I love, but over the past several years, I would argue that many of the films in which he has starred have been questionable - at best - for entertainment value (my opinion only). I have not seen him in anything since Adaptation because I have felt lukewarm (or worse) about every movie that he's been in since then. I even started giving deep thought to his earlier roles in the films that I still enjoy and, in many cases, he could easily have been replaced by any one of numerous other actors and the films would have been just as good. Anyone else feel similarly or want to add to this list?

How could you determine your feelings about the movies he made after Adaptation if you haven't even seen any of them?

Re: Overrated actors
Trailers - I know that some of the best movies that I have seen have had pretty bad trailers (and vice versa), but I feel that I have viewed enough movies and their trailers to get a good feel for how I will feel about the movie. I am open to being wrong and I would be very open to someone making a recommendation of which post-Adaptation Nic Cage films are most worthy of viewing. I have been almost inspired to see a couple of those movies, but the hit-or-miss factor has provoked me to decide to not take the chance more often lately. Another important deciding factor is my very limited time because I am a full-time college student and I work. Now that I have very little free time, I miss getting to go to a great deal of movies that I'd normally rush out to the theatres to see, so when I do get to play catch up, I have to choose the movies that are highest on my list. Again, I mean no offense to anyone who thinks that he's a good/great actor - I think that he has given some great performances and I don't think that that contradicts my feeling that others could have been interchangeable in some of those roles.
I thought that we were all more or less in agreement that even films that we personally like/love are admittedly overrated and I happen to feel that the same truth (opinion?) can apply to certain entertainers. Perhaps it would be more applicable describe my sentiment as "overly hyped" actors, but it's very close. I happen to think that both Jason Schwartzman and Sofia Coppola are great at what they do, but do I also think that their careers have been helped by being related to Francis Ford Coppola? Yes. Do I feel the same about Nicolas Cage? Yes. Would I accept someone else's opinion that either Jason Schwartzman or Sofia Coppola are overrated? Absolutely.

I think that I am not going to see Ghost Rider... I think that Nick's hit the end of being handed roles that are good for him. He used to be very gutsy with his choices, but lately he's been getting more and more like the everyman. He should take a back seat to someone else who is better at being boring and be the character actor he wanted to be at the beginning of his career.

Re: Overrated actors
I love Nic Cage, but the latest movie I saw him in Really let me down. "The Wicker Man" was the worst movie I had seen in a long time. I still want my $8 back. The plot sucked. The trailor looked really good, but the trailor showed all the good parts in the movie. I agree that he should take a break from acting and possibly have someone else pick his next role. May favorite movie starring Nic Cage was "Leaving Las Vegas." It made me laugh and it made me cry...

"i feel the same way about his acting choices that his made after 2001;BUT i have seen a few of his movies after 2001 that are worth considering :(Especially with the limited time you have). The ones that i have seen that have a pretty good script/story are Matchstick Men (2003),its a pretty good movie with alison lohman(pretty talented young actress);A father /daughter heist story with very good twist Another i would recommend would be Lord of War (2005);It is not a swashbuckling action like con-air and face/off but it is worth watching:Its about an arms dealer, how he feels about it ,his relationships, what he is good at ,and he's rise to success; The movie has some very good lines and an ending which is quite unique; It also stars ethan hawke as a by the book detective who is in the hunt of capturing him; This movie reminds me a bit of the heat and the killers in which you do not neccessary root for the good or bad guy(criminal or cop),there are grey areas; The movie does a great job of telling you why the characters are the way they are(especially the n.cage character)
