The MOST OVERATED MOVIES... 1 and 2 ...

THE single most overated movie if all time would have to be "ET..." ... That movie was HORRIBLE... the only redeming factor was Drew Barrymore...

Number '2' would have to be "JAWS" (!!!) ... as much as I hate to say it because "JAWS" is one of my FAVORITE movies!!! ...

I totally agree with ET! I hated that movie!!

I've never seen Jaws, so no opinion there.

I disagree with both.

ET still makes me cry when he gets to fly home in his little spaceship.  It's kind of an emotional roller coaster, too.  The way it was directed, the storyline...  it's a movie that holds up.

Jaws was a very clever movie, even if the shark still looks fake (that's a quote from "Back to the Future Part II").  It had a way of being scary and jumpy and make me not like sharks.

I think whomever added The Blair Witch Project to the list - that should be #1.

While I agree it was overhyped for the movie.  The premise of the movie set itself apart from any movie to come along.  Not to mention one of the cheapest movies to film (The film cost $22,000 to make and made back $240.5 million).   Plus the original internet marketing (prior to Artisan taking over) was one of the key ingredients for it success.  No other film has generated buzz off the internet like that move has.

I could keep going on as my best friend e. had a website for the Blair Witch Project (the Guide to the Blair Witch) who's hits surpassed Artisan's website.  He was in the TV special for the Blair Witch and got to work with Haxan due to the popularity of his site.

Wow ET?!  That's a good movie, granted not the best, but good.  Come on Little Drew talking about the "moon man", screaming in the closet, and dressing up ET in a red-haired wig.  Henry Thomas was great as Elliot, and where else are going to see a kid explain Lando Calrissian to a martian!  I learned how to fake a fever from that kid.  When I was little and the government operatives storm the house in those space suits, I about passed out.

As I said, Drew Barrymore's performance is the ONLY redeming content in that movie...

As I was saying... JAWS is a GREAT movie and one of my all-time favorites .... I have seen this movie more than 30 or 40 times! (I lost track several years ago)  But, it is STILL HIGHLY OVERATED.... and here's why:   first, and foremost, the shark is just TOO fake looking... especially when compared to the "actual shark footage" that Spielberg felt compelled to include, for some reason (a mistake)...  the "live" shark (or one of them) has several pieces of rope (fishing line) trailing from it's mouth... a moment later, the "fake" shark does not....   also, when Quint is being "eaten", you can see the sharks rubber teeth BENDING against the body armor that Robert Shaw is wearing under his army coat!    Also, there are several serious editing flaws... the afore mentioned 'live-shark-fake-shark' for one... and watch carefully at the end when Brody stabs the shark in the nose with a pike as the boat is sinking... you will see what I mean....   I just think that for the money spent, the filmakers could have done a better job....

You seem to like the movie despite the fact that you can find things that make the shark look fake when you scrutinize it.  Why do you think that it shouldn't be liked as much as it is just because of this fact?  Obviously it's the directing, the acting, the script, the music, whatever else that makes it a great movie.  Do you really put this kind of measurement of special effects as the final judgement for if a movie should really be worth it's pervasive level of acclaim?

Batman and Robin moments....

That was a tough shoot back in the day, though.  I heard that the model kept on breaking and it delayed shooting.  They didn't have computer animation back then; it was all about the muppet shark.

I never got the scare factor of Jaws either.  I remember kids that were scared to get into bathtubs after that movie.  I think its interesting, but the idea of a super aggresive shark never got me.  Don't go swimming in the ocean.
