The more the merrier

As the description of this group says:
There are many kinds of film fans in the world - those who follow favorite genres, those who dedicate themselves to the greatness of singular directors...and those who simply love to watch film. All kinds of film, all sorts of genre. In the process, they watch a lot of film...a lot. This group is for them.
This group is for people who have watched a ton of films. How many is a ton? If you have seen over 1500 films, come on in. We have amassed a wide breadth and depth of knowledge about film. By the way, 1500 films represents about 112 days of film-watchin goodness!

Want to join? Just ask.

Already a member? What have you learn from all of that film watching?

Re: The more the merrier

What have I learned Bill?

What time of night I can start a movie and still stay awake.
That there are a ton of shitty films, some of them you should watch anyhow, some you shouldn't.
Who makes good films.
Who doesn't.
What directors are getting better.
What writers tell the same story over and over again.
What good theaters there are in the Midwest.
Late fees kill!
It is possible to see every movie at your hometown video store.
Blockbuster rents edited films.
If you rent too much at Netflix, they wait to send them to you later... and later... each time.
Family Video rents stuff super cheap, but their discs are usually scratched.
The public library has almost every Criterion Collection disc, and renting is free.
Some films need multiple viewings, even at the theater, even at full ticket price.
There are fewer and fewer films I find comfortable watching with my parents.
I can only pause the free "On Demand" movies for so long, then they reset back to the beginning.
I'm scared to pay for the films on "On Demand" because I know that my cable bill will be thrashed at the end of the month.
It's hard to watch films on a tiny screen, but it's rewarding nonetheless.
I know that each film has a purpose, even if it's just to make money.
I could have invested all the money I used to watch movies, and be rich beyond my wildest dreams.
The operating hours of every rental place in Grand Rapids.
When to return the movies I rent before I'm charged for another damn day.
What rental employees say "Hello" when you walk in and which ones don't.
That "John" from Blockbuster has really generic film preferences.
That "no late fees" means that you just bought that stupid DVD that slipped underneath your car seat.
I still enjoy the THX sound.
Re-watching films doesn't get you more hours on the counter here at Spout... Even though it should! (Because if you count each of the times I've seen each of Dirty Dancing, Tommy Boy, Ferris Bueler's Day off, Rushmoore, and the Untouchables, you'd be terrified.
I don't care if people don't like my film recommendations, there are films that EVERYONE needs to see.

May we still join even though our Listing, Tagging, etc. doesn't reflect our viewing prowess?  I know I've seen many, many more than I've tagged so far (quite a number left in my own prodigious collection!), so I know I'd fit in.  ;)

Re: The more the merrier

Can i join your group????;i am interested in great movies that are not always about how much money spent on making the movie, the movie that is not always the most popular or a blockbuster hit,ETC.......;Just great all-around movies, that had less budget, did not get the acadamy/or any awards but deserved it.Movies without the hype and is not overrated.;But have a great script, great acting,etc.. plain and simple;Overlooked but great movies, maybe not even seen or commented by professional critics.Just noticed, there need to be more movies listed in this group

THANKS THANKS

Re: The more the merrier

I have seen and rated over 3,470 films (on IMDB) mostly because I watch at least one a day during nap time for my kids and two a day during work days (I work at the airport and we usually have over 4 hours of downtime a day). For the last five years I've been working on watching the cannon of great film off of recommended lists. My film IQ has grown quite a bit over this period, but I feel like the massive (obsessive?) film watching hasn't helped me grow in any other area of life. I keep thinking I'll get back to reading and socializing after I finnish my quest, but I just don't think watching film has helped me grow in any way except in appreciating the art of cinema.

So, I guess my question to other film fanatics ( the over 1,500 club) is do you feel excessive film watching has helped or hurt other areas of your life and/or intellect? I guess what I'm saying is that after watching over 3,000 movies (some of them great works of art) I don't feel any smarter except in very specialized areas, do you?

Wow Jason, I wish I had the luxery of seeing that many movies.  I'm lucky if I can get two or three movies in a week.  But maybe I shouldn't feel too jelous based on the possible answers you may receive to the question you are posing.

Re: The more the merrier

I believe you are right;I feel the same way u do after watching so many films throughout my life.It only helps your life if what your watching is relative to what u r going to right now or it can relate specifically to what happened to your past to a particular incident now.Neverthless, u have to remember it specifically ;This films should help u view the same things u see in your life now or the past;Or the film can help u view other insights, ideas or opinion without getting involved. After all u r only WATCHING a movie, not a part of it.

TO truly have a film to make a difference in your life,i think the film has to touch u in a way ,no other film has;It has to INSPIRE u;And MOST of all, u have to take actual action based on your feeling and inspiration.

Also i believe a film might anly help u more in life if u see it more than once, watch the special features, and pay attention to the movie more closely.

What I've Learned

billhr:
What have you learn from all of that film watching?

I've learned that renting and watching 3-5 movie a day over the course of a summer so you can work up the courage to ask out the super cute girl who works at the Hollywood Video is a great way to get shot down and... expand on my knowledge of cinema.

One of a vast number of lessons learned...
