Rock or Metal

I was looking through the lists of films for Metal and Rock and noticed that Alice in Chains was in both list. So I was wondering what other people use as a short list of "criteria" to make the distinction between the Metal and Rock genres.

In their own wrights they are both rather different, but at the same time are very close. Metallica could be designated as metal as well as rock...maybe more metal in their early years but more rock'ish in their later years.

I wouldn’t really classify Alice in Chains as a metal group due to the lack of crunchy guitars and rougher vocals…but someone like Slipknot is distinctly metal.

What are your thoughts?

I would personally put alice in chains in the Rock genre, however MTV included them in their list of 'best metal bands of all time'. Some of alice in chains songs are a bit rough compared to many other rock bands, but not rough at all compared to many metal bands, so thats why they appear in both genres at times.

Re: Rock or Metal

I always thought that "metal" or "heavy metal" was a sub-division of "rock" or "rock & roll".  So I would have assumed that any band that could be called metal, would also be called rock.  Just like a trapezoid is a quadrilateral.

How did you come up with that separation?
