Unobtrusive flash use
I would like to see Spout use a script like Unobtrusive Flash Objects (UFO) to make the site more accessible. There are times I have accessed the site from a Flash-less environment and was confused to find parts of the page bare until I realized that is where the Flash went. If the user doesn't have Flash installed, you could either send an html-based tag cloud or at least just include a message about some features requiring flash.

Re: Unobtrusive flash use
I'm not sure if this is related or not, but all day long I couldn't post using firefox. When I get to the post field, the text portion is there, but you can't click in it. When I tried to run it on IE I got a weird error about there being an unsuported flash active x error. Using my home IE I'm fine, but at work (where I suspect we have active X turned off) I got the error. Both at work and home Firefox doesn't seem to let me post. Probably just a bug from something you are working on, but I was curious if I'm the only one having this problem or not.

Re: Unobtrusive flash use
Hi there!
So I was talking to our tech guys over here and went through some of these issues with them.
The first thing he told me was that our site does require flash and active X to be able to use some of the features on Spout.
I do have a few questions for you though.
First of all, Davis, what version of FireFox are you using when you try to post? Where are you trying to post? In a group or a blog? I have noticed that the subject header line will give you the cursor mouse, but the text field will only give you the arrow, but when you click in it it will give you a cursor. Aaron noticed that as well and recognized this as a problem.
Euphoria, are you able to see the tag clouds in the film detail or user detail? Are you able to post discussion topics?
Sorry you all are having this problem. Bare with me while I try and figure out what is happening to you guys.
Thanks!
Jen

The flash/activex issue only arises with tag clouds, and only when I don't have flash installed. All tag clouds are affected. It's obvious why it's happening, I'm just proposing that it be technically implemented in a way that doesn't require flash/activex, but rather uses it when it's available (such as UFO).

Re: Unobtrusive flash use
Hi euphoria,
This is a great topic for discussion, thanks for bringing it up. The use of something like UFO has been considered, and yes it would empower many users or make them aware of possible missing plugins. At the moment we are concentrating on new functionality versus minor changes. This is not to say that we do not care about those that do not have flash :-). Short term you can probably expect to see a message of a missing plug-in. In the long run a text based tag cloud or some other implementation is definetely feasible. Thanks for the great input ! Keep posting !

Re: Unobtrusive flash use
We are in fact using FlashObject right now to handle this. It's recently become SWFObject and you can check it out here: http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/. We implemented this in response to Microsoft's security update and it's worked pretty well so far.
