Why I only want to buy Criterion Collection
So I came to the realization that Criterion Collection DVDs are incredible. You already know this because you're part of this group... but the ones I have in my personal collection are my most prized. I've actually re-bought the same film on Criterion, after actually owning it on an inferior DVD previously. Each disc is prized, and I want to keep it in my personal collection permanently. We just bought both Videodrome and Picnic at Hanging Rock on Criterion, and I can't to see them and get into the features.
Victor and I actually made the statement "I only want to buy Criterion Collection discs from now on"...

I appreciate the fact that the boxed sets often tell a particular story. Sometimes it is a broad story a director is telling, as in the Truffaut films that share the character Antoine Doinel. It makes me feel like I'm in for a feast that will last me months.

I agree, I own a lot of my favorites on Criterion. I just get scared every time I hear about blu-ray and hd-dvd that that my treasured collection is going to become obsolete. I've already invested a lot and I wish there was some permanence in technology, but I know that will never happen.

That also scared me a bit at first, but then I saw a demonstration of standard DVD compared to Blu-Ray, and the difference was so slight that I wondered what all the fuss was about. Should I re-purchase my entire collection just so the image is a bit crisper? I'm thinking no. Besides, I kind of like the intimate feel of standard DVDs as opposed to the sharp clarity of Blu-Ray or HD. Is it really worth spending $25+ per title just for some enhanced sound and picture?

I totally agree...I'm sort of becoming addicted to them since I'm seeing more and more great movies from the collection.
And here's a semi-off-topic question: I'm debating which Criterion Jim Jarmush DVD to get. I saw Dead Man and it was really good, and now I'm looking for the "next step" so to speak. Does anyone have a recommendation between Stranger than Paradise, Down by Law, and Night on Earth?

Seriously Stranger than Paradise is just as good though. If you loved Dead Man, Down by Law is probably the closest all around, so maybe that's the best place to go next of the three.

Stranger than Paradise is still great and Permanent Vacation is fairly good. But Down by Law is him really coming into his own. And Night on Earth is just so much fun with all of the different locations and actors he was able to begin to attract. Mystery Train fits well between there too, but I don't think it's on Criterion.
