Films that deserve the Criterion treatment

There are certain films which are aching for a Criterion release. My suggestions are Night and Dawn of the Dead (the original Romero versions of course). Also I think there should be at least one Errol Morris film in the collection. Also the Bicycle thief should be in there, even though they included Umberto D.
As for films that don't deserve to be in the collection: the Rock, Armageddon, RoboCop, and Fat Girl. Anything Michael Bay deserves to be burned.

I've always dreamed of the Criterion boxed set of Tarkovsky. They've got Solaris and Andrei Rubelev, but there are much deserved missing pieces. Kino needs to hand over the reigns to Criterion.

Robocop is actually a really sweet movie. The criterion version on DVD is out of print and was a re-release of the Laserdisc from long ago. The movie was butchered for theaters to have an R-rating. The Criterion version, now unavailable, has tons of scenes that are longer or were cut from the original. Truly cool. As for the Michael Bay movies being Criterions... who knows.

They should do Jarmusch's Night on Earth. It's pretty much his only main movie that's no available on DVD. And it's possibly my favorite, in contention with Down by Law, which is currently the only Jarmusch film in the Criteron Collection I believe. And they did an EXCELLENT job with Down by Law.

Oh, I think they should also do some Jodorowsky movies since I've never seen one, but from what I've read they sounds amazing. El Topo or The Holy Mountain.

I have seen Fando Y Lis which I would say comes across as a quite charming hippy flick. It was like a myth told over with psychedelics. A lot better in my opinion than flicks like Zabriskie Point which ends up coming off so frayed in its sensibilities. There was a period there where alot of directors were showing their allegiance to "The Youth" by making films that ended up coming off as decadent and self-indulgent. Fando Y Lis feels innocent and lovely. I'd love to see more from this director as well.

I would love to see Bottle Rocket get the Criterion treatment. It's the only Wes Anderson film to not be included and itt is my very favorite Anderson film. Right now it only has a bare bones dvd and I would love to see a good transfer and a lot of supplements.

Point Blank (not Break, but I like that one too) is another one of my favorite flicks. I have the dvd of it, but I'd like to see Criterion do it. Here are all the others that would make me very happy: L.A. Confidential, The Player, Chinatown, A Touch of Zen, Hud, The Manchurian Candidate, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Hustler, Judgement at Nuremberg, Psycho, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Rear Window, Anatomy of a Murder, Touch of Evil, Paths of Glory, Sweet Smell of Success, Twelve Angry Men, Sansho The Baliff, Stalag 17, The Bad and the Beautiful, It's a Wonderful Life, A Matter of Life and Death, Laura, This Gun For Hire, My Favorite Wife, His Girl Friday, The Grapes of Wrath, Holiday. I can make a case for every one of these based on the quality of the film and what Criterion has already chosen.

Personally I find it odd that the only Kubrick to be Criterionized (not a word) is Spartacus. Don't get me wrong, I liked Spartacus but I would prefer to see Criterions of the other Kubrick films. Specifically Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining & The Killing.

Also, what's with the Beastie Boys video anthology? How to Criterionize something that will (apparently) never cease being added to. It's already out of date, isn't it? Plus: THE BEASTIE BOYS!? Really, that's an important contemporary music DVD? Monterey Pop is perfectly understandable but Beastie Boys? Arrrgh... At least Criterionize Big Time of The Last Waltz.

I have a friend who works for a distribution and delivery company that occasionally gets Criterion stuff and he says that Dead Man is also on their upcoming release schedule (I'm trying to get him to get me a hardcopy of this magical list).
