Worst Movie Court in Session - 3 Charges, RoboCop 1, 2, & 3

In an earlier Battlefield Earth post, Gus had nominated Robocop 3 on charges of being a Hollywood Lackluster and I thought that I'd start a thread to initiate formal charges against the film. It's hard for me to look past the sequels. so I thought I'd nominate Robocop 1 & 2 as well and let the group determine if these are suspects or witnesses.

Gus' argument for a guilty verdict on Robocop 3 - Just when you thought this franchise (if you can call it that) could'nt get any worse, Hollywood shows everyone just how big a turd they can really produce. There are no stars in this. Atleast  Travolta, Barry Pepper and Forrest Whitaker were in Battlefield. Not that that helped any. Robocop 3 had a horrendous story, laughable dialogue, piss-poor special effects (nothing "special" about them, they sucked), the worst action scenes, and the acting didn't even measure up to what can be seen in any high school production. Nope,no redeeming factors at all. If you absolutely have to see Robocop, do yourself a favor and watch the original.

Frankly, I agree with Gus when it comes to Robocop 3.  The film was weak and was only put out to squeeze the last drops of cash out of the franchise.  I vote guilty.

When it comes to Robocop 2, I also vote guilty of being a Hollywood Lackluster.  The plot was laughable, the acting was terrible and the environment of the film was a total joke.

As far as Robocop 1 goes, I vote not guilty.  That movie rocked.  Maybe it was that it seemed so fresh at the time it came out, but the movie was a solid blockbuster in my book.  Normally, if I like a film I tend to like the whole series, but when it comes to the Robocop family 2 of the brothers are bad in my book, but one turned out alright.  Sometimes people just don't know when to quit.

RoboCop (the number one left off intentionally) Not-Guilty!
Come on, we all liked, if not loved RoboCop, if we saw it at the time of release.
Remember the 80’s?
Big business was the sinister dark force behind all the wrong in the world.
RoboCop showed how the little man could still take a stand for what is right, and WIN!
This was pre Erin Brockovich.

As for the series, I do not visit the sins of the child on the parent.
Frankly, I am surprised if subsequent films in a series are any good all.
The Godfather and Back to the Future series may as well be one very long movie to me, not unlike the Lord of the Ring Trilogy.  They extend the story line and move the characters forward.

I wipe bad sequels from my mind, they are dead to me.  These would be Blade, Friday the 13 and Halloween (sorry Davis).  All of these are very good movies to me, but have very bad sequels.

So, for RoboCop 2 & 3… Guilty!

No need to apologize for the bad Halloween reference, they made some real bombs and there are still many questions left unanswered (like who was the guy with the boots)  Halloween 4 was awesome, but the third was was just plain terrible though.  My personality is such that if I watch an original I have to see the sequel no matter how bad, so it's hard for the first one not to influence my opinion later.  I did forget how sinister big business was during the 80's.  It's strange that at the same time Michael Milken was making a killing in the junk bond market, we were denouncing big business in RoboCop.  It was as if the country loved to hate business, but had no problem being part of the machine.  I guess the more things change the more things stay the same.  So that makes two guilty votes for both sequels and two not guilties for the originals.  Anyone else want to weigh in on the merits of these films?

Robocop has it's own artistic merits, but 2 and 3 should get the axe. In fact, the government should remove such films so they can't be represented overseas. It's a blot on our culture.

I propose all sequels be immediately sent to some sort of detention camp. For most of them (Godfather II excluded) the motivation for making them is flawed from the beginning.

Speaking of sequels, I just came across this one. Who knew?

You can't send all sequels to jail or detention camp.  Some of them are good.  Some of them are better than the original.  Consider the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Pirates of the Caribbean (not better than the original, but pretty darn good), Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (not better than Raiders but good - and not Temple of Doom), X-Men 2 (but not 3), Spider Man 2 (not better than the original)...and, of course, you also mentioned Godfather II.

There might be flawed motivation, but I am a big fan of story continuation so long as the story is well-written and well-filmed.  Unfortunately, the allure of additional dollar signs sometimes overshadows earnest efforts in making a truly good sequel.  That's Hollywood fer ya.

Robobcop 2 is pretty terrible and I won't be checking in on Robocop 3 because I've heard it's even worse.

The original Robocop though is a great movie. Anyone who doesn't realize that this film is full of satire and pathos against the backdrop of coporate greed and urban decay does not understand this point of the film. This is not supposed to be a testosterone infused action flick. This is a comedy and a morality tale about how society is decaying from the inside out and that those who try to save it are on a fool's errand. Ultimately though, it is about how a the soul of a man (Peter Weller) can never be wiped out/erased/eradicated by technology or cynicism. It's a good message and well told by Verhoven.

First movie had me.  It was a good action flick.   It sank horribly by 2 and 3.   Guilty for 2 and 3.  Not guilty for 1.
