Re: Best use of music in a scene
Good topic. Here are a few off the top of my head:
In Reality Bites, when Lelana sees Ethan Hawke's character at her doorstep as she's running to go find him, and it's U2's "All I Want Is You."
In Bridget Jones' Diary, each song choice fits perfectly with the scene. It's a well put together movie. The recurring "Aint No Mountain High Enough" for Bridget's love trials and tribulations. The signature song, "Out of Reach," playing as she leaves the Darcys, thinking she lost her chance on her happy ending. I could go on.
The only reason I still cry watching E.T. everytime (yes EVERYTIME) is the score when E.T. says "I'll be right here..." and then it builds into that sweeping mix of brass and strings as he boards the ship, and Elliott is crying, and good spaceship special effects for 1982, flying away, and ....*tear*
In Lord of the Rings, Return of the King... the scene as Frodo and Gandalf leave on the ship to the Valinor at the very end, using musical phrasing from the Annie Lennox song at the end... I mean, I've already been crying my eyes out about the poor little hobbits and how they saved Middle Earth, but now Frodo's leaving, and this somber yet hopeful melody drifting along... I want to cry now just writing this.
I probably would've thought Titanic was a bit stupider if not for that score. Maybe not. I got suckered into it like so many people.
In the Matrix, Rage Against the Machine's "Wake Up" for the end scene when Neo, now "The One," takes off like Superman for the first time. How perfect was that?
In Schinder's List, as Schindler's survivors pass his grave setting stones atop the headstone...man, that John Williams is a genius, have I mentioned that?
These are just some I can think of...hard to think.
P.S. Luke Skywalker never dodged magic bullets. Psh.
