I appreciated it; the plot, savagery, and it had some fairly incredible scenes, but overall I didn't love it. The remake seems to be following the original but with a little Devil Rejects feel to it.

What does everyone think? Remakeable or stick with the original?

Sidenote: if you haven't seen the original I wouldn't suggest watching the trailer for the remake because it pretty much gives away everything including the twist that made the original so iconic.

Okay Doc, we are on the same wave length, a couple of weeks ago I had some friends over for our Scary Movie night and also watched Fulci's Zombi since they had not seen it, but after that we watched UnDead and Let the Right One In (this was a very cool movie from Denmark, I think, I really liked it, a very subtle horror movie about a young vampire and her friendship with a little outcast boy), not a fluffly feel good movie, but I really liked it.

The Wolf Man looks really cool, I'm excited to see it too.

OK, so I haven't seen The Wolf Man yet but last night I had a couple of friends over for a "Horror Movie Night" . We ate Tombstone pizza's and Taco Bell and drank a LOT of alcohol and watched horror movies all night We watched Fulci's ZOMBIE. followed by the ORIGINAL versions of The Last House On The Left and The Hills Have Eyes . Fun times! GREAT movies! Brought back a lot of memories for all of us.

The Wolfman is DEFINATELY on my "to-do" list...

   Personally, I am going to try to make one of my VERY rare excursions to the movie theatre this weekend to see the remake of The Wolf Man ...   from what I have been reading in FANGO and elsewhere, everybody tried to stay true to the orginal CLASSIC except for kicking this one up a couple of notches in the gore and nudity departments earning this movie an "R" rating.  I can't wait to see it.

Somehow The Wolfman totally slipped my me this week. I didn't realize that was coming out. I'm actually pretty interested in this one. Benicio Del Toro as Talbot could be pretty sweet.

Well, I just read a review from Friday's Denver Post on this movie and I have seen a couple of trailers and I must say that my curiosity is piqued. The reviewer that I read in the paper (I think it was a woman) said that they were rather offended and disturbed by the rape scene in this movie (there is only one) and the brutal and sadistic nature of the entire opening act (sounds just like the original), so much so that he/she almost walked out of the theater... Sounds like my kind of movie! Seriously, I am looking forward to seeing this one...

Not yet, Rizzo. I will let you know when I do. As much as I dislike MOST remakes there actually are a few exceptions ...

Tom Savini did a decent job of remaking NOTLD and I thought that the Dawn Of The Dead and Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes are pretty cool. NOT as good as the originals but very good movies in thier own right.

Someone is always going to get offended by something. I'm sure they tried to make it more brutal instead of sexual showing how horrible it is, etc.

Anyway, I think I will see it when it comes out on DVD. I feel the same way about these damn trailers anymore, there are several movies where they show some key parts that I wished I had not seen before watching the movie because I knew it was going to happen. So irritating!!

I missed this in your post earlier! I couldn't agree more! Trailers nowdays seem to either give away EVERYTHING, all the funny lines, the plot, even the ending... or they are so jumbled and confusing you have no interest in seeing the film because you have absolutely no idea what its about!

I agree. I'm done watching trailers. DON'T watch the trailer for Timecrimes. I happened to watch it out of curiosity as to how they were advertising it after I watched the movie. I was pissed at some of the things they revealed!

I missed this in your post earlier! I couldn't agree more! Trailers nowdays seem to either give away EVERYTHING, all the funny lines, the plot, even the ending... or they are so jumbled and confusing you have no interest in seeing the film because you have absolutely no idea what its about!

Well I'm a big fan of Ingmar Bergman even though the six films I've seen of his now are still only a small percentage of his prolific output. I was looking fowards to this movie because it was from a similar era as my favorite The Seventh Seal, also taking place in what looks like a middle ages time period and dealing with spiritual matters.

Now that I've seen it I can guess, even though I still haven't seen Last House on the Left, that this movie is probably a lot less graphically disturbing than that film, at least in a matter of fact way. But it certainly is quite emotionally disturbing, and maybe at least cinematically visually disturbing without being explicit. Gor, I know that you have a broad definition of what "horror" is, but even in a narrower definition I wouldn't be too hesitant to say there are some pretty horrific elements to this. Some redemptive qualities too I'd say though.

I just got a chance to watch The Virgin Spring on IFC this morning and it was incredibly obvious that Wes Craven took a great amount of 'inspiration' from the film when he made Last House on the Left. Aside from the time it is set, the age of the attackers, and the method of revenge employed by the parents, it's the exact same story-line. Nice call on the connection Risselada.

And I would absolutely LOVE to see Virgin Spring ....

Don't kid yourself, Rizzo. There is VERY little or NO "on-screen" gore or splatter in a LOT of the greatest ones.. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , Night of the Living Dead , Psycho ... But as for the most DISTURBING I would include such movies as Deliverance and I Spit on Your Grave and Nekromantik and THE EXORCIST (!) ... and Last House is an easy tie for first place! This movie has that certain appeal to it that makes you want to go take a shower after you see it...

Now I've heard that The Last House on the Left was essentially a remake of sorts of this movie. I did not realize that there was also a remake of that movie coming out soon as well! But maybe I'll come back and discuss after I watch Virgin Spring, which I may do tonight.

I've read about this movie, Virgin Spring , and that it was possibly one of Craven's inspirations for Last House... You must let me know what you think of it, Rizzo!

I wouldn't doubt it.   Recently I watched The Omen remake for the second time (don't ask me why) and all I could keep thinking throughout the entire movie was WHY?   It is almost an exact scene for scene and word for word copy of the original but with less talented actors.   WHY?   Much like that hideous Psycho remake from a few years ago....   What is the point?   WHY???

    I guess I will never understand it...

I get the feeling that a lot of directors confuse "paying homage" to a film with copying a film. In some twisted sense, they seem to justify the remake as a way of paying tribute to, or bringing a "new generation" to an awareness of a great film.

Really, what they should be doing is trying to bring some of the old classics back to the theatre, and not trying to duplicate something that has already been done, with flashier effects. Too many directors get George Lucas syndrome, where they feel that the technology makes the film. Lucas proved that by waiting decades to make the final installments of the StarWars series.

The technology is way better now, but the later movies absolutely sucked (IMHO). The same can be said for the remake of The Omen, which despite its elaborate sets and technical eye-candy was about as scary as a bag of puppies.

Now, I think that a remake is not to be confused with a re-interpretation of a film. I can see a re-imagining/re-interpretation as a legitimate art form if its done well, but to simply copy a film and not try to improve on the storytelling is absolutely pointless, and in no way an homage to a great film--in fact, given the fact the remakes generally sucks, its probably doing a great disservice to a classic.

   You are talking about one of my favorite horror films.   I first saw Last House on the Left at the drive-in at a very young age (my Dad took me).   I have watched it a few times since then and it will always be one of my favorites.   I loved the comedic bits they threw in to try to "lighten" the movie a bit but, under the circumstances, they weren't really funny at all....   only more disturbing...

   I am a HUGE fan of Wes Craven and I thought Nightmare on Elm Street was something of a masterpiece.   I am usually not a big fan of remakes and I think it would be difficult for ANYBODY to top the original version of this.   But if Wes Craven would like to update and re-do his own masterpiece I am more than curious to see it...

Wow. I just read my own confusing and misleading post! I REALLY need to start drinking more...

Of course I was talking about Last House on the Left at the end of that post when I was talking about Wes Craven re-doing his own masterpiece and NOT A Nightmare on Elm Street ! I only mentioned that one in passing as one of my favorites. I think you all got what I was trying to say, anyhow, in the context of the post. ("caveman", remember?) ...

Although I DID read a rumor somewhere that a Nightmare remake was looming on the horizon (!) ... AND with a different Freddy Krueger (!!!) ...

I am usually not a big fan of remakes and I think it would be difficult for ANYBODY to top the original version of this. But if Wes Craven would like to update and re-do his own masterpiece I am more than curious to see it...

A good friend of mine is playing the bad girl of the gang in this remake. She saw a screening and said it was actually very good. The trailers look decent, but I'm mad at how much they show. The art of the trailer is lost.

I saw the preview for it when I was at the movies last night. It looks really good. It also looks like he tweaked the story a bit and changed it a tad, I'm not sure if it's going to be a semi happy ending or not...but from the previews I am definately going to watch it.

Yes, thank god Wes Craven is going to remake his own film, I might give it a shot then. The movie has such a hokey charm to it, I don't know how to explain it, especially when the "gang" is at the parents home. But it still just makes me so sad when she goes into the water...

Being Wes Craven's first film (I almost typed "Anderson" out of habit!) my curiousity is piqued, but I'm a little nervous about seeing any film that contains "brutal rape scenes" according to the plot summaries I can find. I get queasy even when its merely implied. Maybe I'm a bit of a cad, but I've always felt rape is one thing that doesn't need to be expressely and graphically portrayed in a film--I think the audience is smart enough to imagine and figure out whats going on if the director does his/her job right. How graphic were the scenes in the original? It seems like the trend in most horror/thriller remakes is to crank up the testosterone, cram in a lot of special effects and merely retell the same tale rather than actually reinterpret it...
