Well, that's a shame, because part of the reason I love this site is because I can usually trust the conversations to branch off into interesting tangents. There's a difference between argument and debate. I know for my part there was no anger or malice in any of my statements, and i was just taking part in the discussion.

Yeah, I know my comments were a little pointed but in the end I was just making an argument for the sake of discussion. No ill will intended (despite the somewhat disgruntled tone of it).

Back to the topic:

Just watched In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and am rather perplexed. It was surprisingly captivating in the sense that I just HAD to see how it was going to end.

I imagine that any one of the Lord of the Rings trilogy films would have looked like this if Peter Jackson had: made the film for 1/8 of what he did; completely disavowed of the source material and just randomly added characters that he thought were cool; chose all of his favorite actors (even though they were wrong for the parts).

The cast was an eclectic mix of people that could have worked if they were given more to work with (i.e. the dialogue which was incredibly hilarious, unintentionally, and made parts of the film rather enjoyable and others just unbearable).

Being that I had played the computer game the film was based on I think I am a little more biased against the movie because of its complete lack of connection with it. Aside from the main character, the army of monsters called Krug and the name of the kingdom, there really wasn't too much else that was taken from the game.

I never played Bloodrayne the game, did the same happen with that film?

What about the others?

Okay, childishness aside, I don't see how my blanket statement was any more disagreeable than Gor's blanket statement, but I'll try and defend my point.

The cinematic output of any single genre is going to be so vast, so varied, that saying one shitty movie is better than an entire genre is going to unfairly dismiss some pretty decent films. I'll agree with Gor on this point, if given a choice between a craptastic monster movie I'm almost guaranteed to hate and your average romantic comedy, I'd choose the monster movie. But seriously, As Good As It Gets kicks ass.

I have to say something here, because I seriously don't think it's fair to say Alone in the Dark is better than, say, It Happened One Night, or As Good As It Gets, or any Billy Wilder film.

To you though. Everything is relative. It's undoubtedly my education getting in the way but who's to say anything is better than something else. Gor loves his gore and that is awesome. Not to dissuade further discussion because I think it's fundamental to this site and everything, but blanket statements like that are rather inconsequential since everyone has their own independent thoughts about movies. It sucks SO much, that when I, personally, heard that Boll directed Bloodrayne, I crossed it off my "to see" list. He also directed Alone in the Dark which, wasn't necessarily horrible, but it weren't good neither. All the movies he makes, by the way, are usually based on video games, in case you didn't catch that.
I have a friend who absolutely HATES Uwe Boll. I'm not a hating kind of person. But, I must say, he does suck. I like the picture of him giving the finger, though. That earned him a couple points in my book. Anyway, what do yous all think? Should Boll stop directing? Or should everyone stop whining and bitching and just go see Postal? And Far Cry? And Bloodrayne 3?

Ok.... I don't think ANYONE should be 'banned' from making movies, no matter how bad they suck... I have seen 'House Of The Dead' and it truly sucks... this is probably the WORST movie I have ever seen! (and that is saying a LOT!) ... but it is STILL a Horror Movie and it is better than the best romantic comedy... So where does that leave us... I hate it because it is terrible and yet I still love it...

Yeah, I'm basically of the opinion that Boll just feeds off attention, be it good or bad. I think he's an idiot, personally, and not really worth the time of day, so I choose to skip over his movies. "In the Name of the King" was a little tempting, since it looks like such a grade-a piece of flymeat that's just asking to be flayed ala Mystery Science Theater, but until that day comes, I'm just going to sit back and watch the fireworks, thanks.

Huh. It seems to me that you could take that statement, and make it a compliment. Look at it out of context, and imagine you're speaking about Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch. Not to defend Uwe Boll, but it seems to me taking a hands on approach to filmmaking is something we usually want directors to do more often.
And as for that petition, I've decided not to sign it. I've never seen a Uwe Boll film. I hear their horrible, and I have no doubt they are, but I've just never felt like actively watching one. So, what does it matter to me if they suck? And even if I did subject myself to House of the Dead or Alone in the Dark, I don't think I'd want to sign the petition. I can always choose not to watch them.

I think it's a rather moot point. There are always going to be "good" directors and "bad" directors, "good" screenplays and "bad" screenplays, et. al. It may not be any kind of majority, but some people do like his films and I think he serves a purpose (however inane it may be).

Personally, I had wanted to see Bloodrayne when I found out that Guinevere Turner was scripting it (I liked Go Fish and The Notorious Bettie Page and loved American Pyscho) and was completely horrified when I had seen the final product. Interestingly, I was able to talk with Guinevere in L.A. through a friend of mine that was friends with her friends or some weird six degrees of separation like that. Anyways, I wanted to talk to her about Bloodrayne and when I barely finished speaking the word she rolled her eyes and made a look of disgust on her face that pretty much explained everything. She briefly mentioned fighting with Boll and his people over the script and how most of it was taken out of her hands because he had final approval and by the end she decided to not take her name off the film because she was getting a decent paycheck out of it.
