this was an excellent point, the kind with an 'ah!' moment:

The kind where there is a monster!

You had a great discussion thread going where we explored this, the definition of a monster. It was about who seemed to be the more terrifying, Hannibal Lecter or Norman Bates and the spin off to who was the better Lecter ( and oddly, my choice was Brian Cox, of Manhunter, not Hopkins )

I keep returning to 'the last man on earth' where the zombies were not terribly terrifying, at least in the modern sense. Dr. Morgon just pushes them to the side with very little effort, a nuisance rather than a threat. His zombies do not shred or rip flesh, they only bite the one woman ( if I am correct ); and a few of them seem to just pass away outside his home each night and in the morning Morgan carts them away, to the pit, and then continues his work searching through each building and pounding stakes through those he finds hearts, but what still gets me is... SPOILER...

as the disease progresses, claiming more and more and finally reaching 'home', his daughter first goes blind and succumbs, he has to watch as his dead daughter is taken away and goes into the fire pit, when his wife dies, he does his wife the honor of burial, instead of the fire...AND then she comes back!!! right to their doorstep!!! then his dear friend shows up every night outside his barricaded home beating on his door and moaning and howling his name, MORGANNN! MOORGANNNNNN!

Subtle, Monsterous, Terrifying and more to me; I think that I would much rather battle the snapping, drooling horde; the onslaught of hyper-strong, slathering fiends in I am Legend than see my loved ones return in that condition. That wonderful story The Monkey's Paw, by W.W. Jacobs explored this as did Pet Sematary

I cannot speak for the book I am Legend, but at least in Last Man on Earth more so than Omega Man and I am Legend films, your 'the kind where there is a monster' seems explored and seems to fulfill the book's title.

To the zombied survivors, Morgan is the 'Monster', the 'Legend'. ( the pictures of Morgan's victims in I am Legend are completely gruesome ). You can see how this making a monster out of Morgan play out in the mythology of the survivors. Morgan becomes the larger than life Boogeyman, the children are sent to bed with the 'don't let Morgan get you' admonishment.

There is that wonderful scene, and although it is not Morgan/boogeyman, played out with amazing insight and grace in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome where Max finds the tribe of children, the myth which the children seem to recount fireside each evening complete with props to explain their reality. Max embodies and fits and is the Legend ( although funny he is not at that point, but he becomes it !). Part of the close of the film is the recounting of the new mythology with the children grown old, parents now, passing the legend on....

I still have not put all this together into a review of these films, including Omega Man, but will...

I think I like your second list better. PLEASE keep the feedback coming and contributing to this group! I have a lot I want to talk to you about that I'm sure our other members will appreciate as well! Also, I saw that you enjoyed 'The Funhouse' ... How much fun is that movie? I particularly liked the opening 'shower-scene' that paid tribute to 'Psycho' AND 'Halloween' all in one fell swoop! This is my FAVORITE kind of 'Monster Movie' ! I am working on another one, which is just my 31 favorites regardless of how many a year. These choices listed, fit my definition of horror. They are horrifying and extremely unsettling, but may not be, in the strictest sense, horror. but well, here it is. Oh, I also did not not include the Alien films which although 'monster goes boo!', even though I love every one of them, fall somewhere in the realm of Science Fiction to me...enough gibberish, here it is:

By the way, I want 'Mommie Dearest' to be No. 1, but that is another story.

Just to clarify, I don't hate Japanese Horror or Korean or Hong Kong Horror (ever seen 'the hopping vampires' in a few Hong Kong movies?) ... I just don't think it is the best. Remember my motto, I have never met a horror movie that I didn't like! I would rather watch the crappiest Horror Movie than the BEST 'romantic comedy/musical/love story' any day of the week. It is just that, from my own observations, the Americans and Italians have perfected this art form over the course of many years followed closely by the Spanish and British and Germans. I judge each and every Horror film on it's own merits and, for me personally, I find all of the 'oriental' versions lacking... I hope this will answer your question as, if I explain any further we might get into that 'racist' thing again...

I can certainly see where other countries have been seminal and had highly creative periods of horror film making. You can't deny the influence of the Italians as we've discussed before. But even though I'm not that steeped into the world of horror movies, my impression is that the most interesting and innovative horror stuff to come out in the last several years has been from Asia. You can see that more and more of the stuff is getting distribution in the US. And it seems like Hollywood studios are almost becoming dependent on those industries to give them ideas for remakes.

I really enjoy Asian horror movies. I think it's because I REALLY like the suspense and ghostly and creepy aspect of movies and almost all of the movies have that in them. There are a lot of Japanese movies that I like much better than the American versions (now it's a toss up between The Ring and Ringu - I think they are both pretty great, I might even like the American version better on that one - BUT the second Ring movie, the American versions SUCKED while I really loved the second Ringu movie, I don't think I ever had so many goosebumps). I also liked the Japanese version of the Grudge better and I just watched the Japanese version of One Missed Call (that was a very cool movie).

But I am with Gor on this one too, I don't think there are any horror movies that I can't watch. I like just about ALL of them and would much rather see a bad B movie than watch Kate and Leopold (although I am a fan of When Harry Met Sally and a few other chick flicks) I just enjoy scary movies much more.

Hey I myself and a little condused about how it works. I know that from work I can download the file direct into my computer but at home I can only stream the show. It has something to do with the options of your computer I guess.

Did you mean download, or stream? I tried to download a few episodes, but it would only allow me to save the link itself as a firefox document. when I clicked on download(as opposed to right click+save link as), it took me to a quicktime page that played the show for me. Unfortunately my sound card is jacked, so I was planning on putting them on my ipod. As it is I can't listen to anything streaming.

Hey, Rick (Mr. Naked Lunch Radio Show). I tried to download your Halloween Special episodes but with my extremely slow dial-up connection it would take more than a day to do so! ('caveman', remember?) But I am extremely curious to know which movies, if any, our lists have in common! Would it be possible for you to type your list in this group? I am certain there are others like me who don't have the technology to download your 2 hour show and would like to see the list.

I really liked what I was able to listen to of your show and I have one question... How old is Chrystina and what does she look like?
