Seriously, Beelzebub living in the room next to mine. Growing up he would be my babysitter and force me to watch every single scary film the local movie store had on video.

1.) Sharks (Jaws, et al) - Living on the West Coast less than twenty minutes from the beach, it was a safe bet that after watching all of these our family trips to the beach kept me securely on the dunes as far away from the water as possible. I sadly hold sharks (specifically Great White sharks) as my one and only honest to goodness irrational fear to this day.

2.) My mother made sure to cover my eyes during the nude/sex scenes but strangely allowed me to watch the boiled bunny, bathtub and ice pick scenes from these two films. The Haunting (original 1963) No creature, no monster, complete suspense from start to finish. Scariest part is when Nell wants to know why Eleanor is squeezing her hand so tight, then looks and no one is holding her hand at all. Also the door breathing in and out as the (ghost) is trying to get into the main room. I still have nightmares about this one.

2. Invaders from Mars (original) Everyone the boy trusts becomes the enemy. Scariest part is when the police officers go to check things out and get sucked into the ground.

3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original) People becoming things overnight after falling asleep and are replaced by pods. Scariest part is when lead character's girl falls asleep and become one herself and gives him away.

4. The Blob (original) Thing from outer space that can't be stopped. Teenagers no one believes the only witnesses. Grocery store scene with blob chasing them into freezer is the scariest part for me.

5. Hardest one to decide on as there are many good ones to consider but lastly I would have to go with "Invisable Invaders" (original) where the creatures take over dead bodys and reanimate them chasing the living into a bunker where they must catch one of the creatures to find out how to destroy it.
Re:top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kidhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_top_five_movies_that_scared_the_crap_out_of_you/190/25308/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 19 Feb 2008 12:49:52 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:25308laststarfighter47
I feel bad being quite a bit younger than most people in this thread.

but the top five movies that scared me as a kid:

-The FIRST Scream.
God, for years, i hated walking alone or sleeping alone. I figured some guy in a mask was out to stab me. I still can't stay anywhere near open windows/ glass doors.

-THIRTEEN GHOST.
honestly, after watching it over now, it's not as terrifying as i thought it was. But as a kid (and sometimes still now), i was a big ghost beleiver. There was something about those spirits and those ghost eeeh..

-The Abyss.
To this day i can never finish it honestly. I don't know what it is about the film but everytime i try and put it on it gives me the eebie jeebies and i get incredibly sick. Part of me thinks it might be the fact my father's a submariner.

-the FIRST FRIDAY THE 13TH
this only semi-counts. I was maybe 14 at the time when i saw this and it honestly didnt scare me, atleast not until the end. It's the only film that i KNOW made me scream ....and it was the scene where the girl is in the riverboat and thinks everything is okay and than BAM JASON VHOREHEES.

and lastly:

This wasn't actually a film but a television show in the eighties/nineties called GHOSTWRITER. I thought the series finale was actually when Almonzo blew up the house. Can anyone verify?

I am familiar with the notorious rape episode. My mom caught wind of this episode and didn't let me watch it, but for most women I know, it was the moment terror truly entered their lives.

I found the synopsis for the two part episode (Part 1, Part 2) and it is truly F-ed up:

In the first episode of a two-part story, Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) develops a crush on his classmate Sylvia (Olivia Barash), a 14-year-old girl who has developed early. Sylvia's stern father disapproves of Albert's affections and orders his daughter to ignore the boy. Later on, Sylvia is raped by a masked assailant, whereupon her father demands that she keep her "shame" a secret. The situation worsens when Sylvia discovers that she is pregnant.

In the conclusion of a two-part story, Albert's classmate Sylvia (Olivia Barash) has been impregnated by a masked rapist, whereupon her "disgraced" father forcibly removes her from town. Already suspected of being the father of Sylvia's unborn baby, Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) courts further scandal by helping the girl run away from her intolerable home situation. Unfortunately, Albert unwittingly tips off the rapist to the girl's hiding place, leading to a terrifying denouement.

Aaaaaaaaahh! Holy Moses! No wonder Albert developed a morphine addiction in the final season.

Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kidhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_top_five_movies_that_scared_the_crap_out_of_yo/190/4093/1/ShowPost.aspxFri, 08 Dec 2006 01:02:50 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:4093Jymkata47
Wow, you people are making my childhood nightmares revisit me - flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz, the ear leeches from Khan, the heart ripping scene from Temple of Doom, and the general puppet creepiness of The Dark Crystal.

I have some weird choices, but everything affects people differently, right?

1.) I think it was the original Superman that had General Zod and his partners first confined to the spinning mirror prison thing. When they swooshed by screaming it made me feel really uncomfortable as a child.

2.) When Ralphie visited that surreal Santa and elf in A Christmas Story and got kicked down the slide, I got creeped out by that too. I might have still believed in Santa back then and it was weird.

3.) When that Nazi with the glasses had his face melted off in Raiders of The Lost Ark. Holy crap!

4.) Anybody remember Anna to the Infinite Power? The dreams and Nazi prison camp scenes scared me to death.

5.) The shipwreck scene in The Black Stallion really frightened me when I saw it in the theater (I was only 6 at the time). Man, I love that movie.

Does anybody that grew up in the 80's remember a later episode of The Little House on The Prairie when the girls had grown up. It was a two-parter and I think the story was about a circus that had come to town. There was this man that had mime makeup and he ended up stalking and raping one of the girls in town. The image of that guy in white-face popping his face up in a window almost ruined my childhood and it was shown in primetime on a "family" show. My younger sister saw it with me and to this day we shiver when we talk about that guy.

Also, I cannot say "Candyman" three times while standing in front of a mirror!

Re: My Top 5http://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_My_Top_5/190/4090/1/ShowPost.aspxFri, 08 Dec 2006 00:10:04 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:4090Indie47My poor reputation --Tiffany Amber Theisan isn't related to the daughter from Just the Ten of Us, her last name is Theiss. (life-long misconception cleared)Re: My Top 5http://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_My_Top_5/190/4087/1/ShowPost.aspxThu, 07 Dec 2006 23:55:38 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:4087Indie47I just checked it out, and the daughter was kristy swanson?! I don't remember her at all, and apparently I replaced her in my mind w/ Tiffany Amber Theisen's big sister (from Just the Ten of Us).Re: My Top 5http://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_My_Top_5/190/4086/1/ShowPost.aspxThu, 07 Dec 2006 23:49:32 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:4086Indie47

SkyPilot:

3. When I was about four years old there was a movie on tv about a family working together to fight the boogie man, which I remember as a ghostly-looking (but corporeal) gray wraith. It seems to me like they filled their vacuum cleaner with ping-pong balls and put the airflow in reverse to shoot them at him. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yes!!!! While writing your post, highlight a film title, click the button that has a little chainlink graphic with a globe behind it (what does that mean?), then copy and paste the URL of the film's page on Spout into the box that drops down. Whenever you link to a film in a discussion or a blog post, it will show an excerpt of what you wrote on the film's page. Nice, eh?

Alright, I take my Spout Customer Care shirt off. Scary as *** movies....

1) Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid. There's just nothing more scary than truly being stuck in a nightmare. A nightmare with a Snake-man.

2) The trailer for House. A skull with bat wings flew right at me from the TV late one night and I couldn't sleep for two days. I really couldn't. I cried.

3) E.T. - The screeching in the cornfield and crane neck was bad enough, what when he passed out next to that stream and turned into a raw slab of beef, I couldn't take anymore.

4) Superman III - ditto on the giant computer wrapping people in wires and turning them into robots. Robots with SILVER EYES!!!

5) The Wiz - Oh yay! Michael Jackson in a movie! (This is shortly after the Thriller album came out.) That flick was messed up. The creepy tiled parking garage where the support columns break out with arms and start chasing Diana Ross and MJ. Freaky deaky.
Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kidhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_top_five_movies_that_scared_the_crap_out_of_yo/190/3421/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 24 Oct 2006 18:34:44 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:3421tmoney47hey Risselada, how did you make links to all those films? Gremlins - The bad gremlins were scary and gross, ok? It was very traumatizing to see cute Gizmo and his friends transform into those nasty little devils.

2. Return of the Jedi - Jabba the Hutt scared the crap out of me as a child. I saw this on my birthday in the theater and the big laugh scared me. I wasn't too fond of his pet rancor either. I got over it after the first viewing, but it was major at the time.

3. Ghostbusters - When Dana Barrett and Louis Tulley change into the keymaster and the gatekeeper (ok, so, she's a dog) and go stand in front of Gozer's big gate, I was not happy about it.

4. The Wizard of Oz - The Wicked Witch of the West is awful! I grew out of it, but she's not nice.

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - Again, it was all in once scene: Belloch opens the Ark, and his and the ***' faces melt. C'mon, that was pretty gross and scary wrath of God stuff! I didn't handle Temple of Doom too well either with all the creepy crawlies and monkey's brains.
Re: top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kidhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/Re_top_five_movies_that_scared_the_crap_out_of_yo/190/3412/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 24 Oct 2006 14:54:55 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:3412tmoney47This is a great topic. I have so many but here's 5.

1. The Peanut Butter Solution (read my blog)
2. Little Monsters (Dude, there were monsters.)
3. The Burbs (I didn't know it was a comedy back then. it scared the crap out of me)
4. The Lady and the Tramp (for the "We are Siamese if you please" scene alone. That still gives me the chills)
5. Pinnoccio (when they turn into asses and get whiped and sold into slavery).

But moose, your list is pretty good. on the thought of Dumbo, how did you like the heffalumps and woozles song on whinne the poo? Yeah that was scary too. top five movies that scared the crap out of you as a kidhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Top_5/top_five_movies_that_scared_the_crap_out_of_you_as/190/3406/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 24 Oct 2006 06:45:27 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:3406Moose471. Dumbo (the pink elephants on parade made me run out of the room in fright. It is my earliest childhood memory)
2. Return to Oz (That crap'll give you nightmares)
3. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (It's all disturbing plus my sister taught me to fear little people)
4. E.T. (His freaky glowing heart, that awful noise he makes, I hate E.T.)
5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (The bad guy at the end with the high voice and eyeballs that turn into knives)
