I understand what you mean about asking you what they SHOULD have done because it was their choice in the first place. For example, when you wrote " where as Crash and Grand Canyon feel like pretentious sociological-lessons". I think that's how a lot of people felt about Babel, but you know I can't agree with that because they created real characters that deal with situations we just don't deal with everyday and the message ended up being that there's a great need for change. If you saw these films a different way than me, that doesn't make either of us necessarily right or wrong. It's really just about forming our seperate opinions on how these films were presented to us on our seperate "recorders". Don't you think so? I'll have to watch Grand Canyon again to see if it feels like a pretentious sociological lesson.

Other than that I can see were you're coming from. We have completely different aspects towards the ideas of films and what makes them great, which leads us to having different outlooks towards overrated movies. In a way, that's the movie critics debating version of "Babel". What do you think?
Re: 2nd revisionhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Totally_Over_rated/Re_2nd_revision/170/9652/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 29 May 2007 18:30:37 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:9652Risselada31

blakngold:

For "Chungking Express" I hardly see that film in any of my local video stores. Anyways, I understand your viewpoint on the way these stories are constructed in "Crash" and "Grand Canyon". When you said,"To me it seems receiving an Academy Award is the biggest reason for the half of the ratio that would allow someone to call something overrated." This is true but for a film to be overrated and win Best Picture means the movie wasn't that great. But since it's all a matter of opinion I believe, even if you think it's trying to be too important, if the movie lives up to it's hype with the awards it receives and it's critical praise then it deserves it. "Crash" is a film that I believe deserves all of it's hype because they brought a unique form of poetry to racism in this day and age. I guess we just saw "Crash" through completely different lenses.

For "Chungking Express" I hardly see that film in any of my local video stores.
