Today's Oscar buzz from a couple of days ago:

Hey, did you hear? The Screen Actors Guild handed out their awards on Sunday. Feast your eyes on the new list. And sorry for the ineffective lateness of this news, but I didn't have much time to obsess over the Oscars the past few days. All that's cured now :-D.

Also, while I was sleeping, the Directors Guild of America announced its nominees for the annual DGA awards on January 9, 2009. Of importance to us is the award for best director of a motion picture, since it gives us Oscar-lovers a good indication of where the Academy will vote for Best Director.

The nominees are (this doesn't get a separate list, k?):

Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon)

Today's (01/15/2009) Oscar Buzz: Well, it's Oscar buzz across the pond, anyway. The British version of the Academy Awards, known colloquially as BAFTA, announced their Oscar nominations. Today's (01/09/2009) Oscar Buzz: * The Critics' Choice Awards were broadcast on VH1 last night. Anyone watch them? It looks like Slumdog Millonnaire is going to be the movie to beat from the critics' standpoint, since they gave the flick heaps o statues. I have created the list and will be updating the nominees and winners' lists, but my pages aren't loading properly, so it's a work in progress. * The Golden Globes are this Sunday. Stay tuned to see what the landscape looks like there. Anyone hearing anything good?

Well, it didn't appear on all the critics lists, but I am most excited to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I love David Fincher a ridiculous amout and the story is intriguing. I only wish it weren't three hours long.

I'm also excited about Doubt. But that's mostly to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep acting their pants off.

Ok, again 24: Redemption is nominated, and, again, I can't find it on Spout. And, again, I have not labeled specific nominees in the list, but our third major Oscar predictor's nominees our officially listed. Though, if SAG strikes, I will sneer and tsk at these awards. These entertainment industry strikes and probable strikes I offer no opinion on, except to say that the writers' strike killed some of my beloved TV shows, which makes me upset. Pushing Daisies, anyone? And scene.

Slumdog Millionaire Leads Critics' Circle Awards

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is leading the way at the 2009 London Critics' Circle Film Awards with six nominations.

Boyle gets two nods, for Best Director and British Director Of The Year. The India-set drama will compete in the British Film Title category and the movie's star Dev Patel is up for two awards including British Actor of The Year.

Bobby Sands drama Hunger, Mike Leigh's comedy Happy-Go-Lucky, and Ron Howard's Frost/Nixon have five nominations each.

Frost/Nixon is up for Film Of The Year alongside Brad Pitt fantasy The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Sean Penn drama Milk, Pixar animation Wall-E and Mickey Rourke's The Wrestler.

Kate Winslet also gets two nominations, in the Best Actress and Best British Actress categories, for her work in Revolutionary Road and The Reader, while the late Heath Ledger is leading competition for the Best Actor Prize. Also nominated in that category are Rourke (The Wrestler), Penn (Milk), Josh Brolin (W) and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon).

Dame Judi Dench will be handed the Dilys Powell Award For Outstanding Contribution To Cinema at the London ceremony which will take place on 4 February.

I'm glad Burn After Reading got nominated for best comedy/musical for the Golden Globes. That was my favorite 2008 movie, although I haven't seen that many.

Ok, so the Globes nominee list is up, but I'll parse out what's nominated for what later. The only note: in the made-for-TV movies, I can't find 24: Redemption in Spout's database. That's ok, because that feels much more like television than a made-for-TV movie, and frankly, it wasn't all that great. I'm not all of a dither about the upcoming season of 24 because of it, is what I'm saying. I'm much more of a dither about the fact that Pushing Daisies was canceled, but that's a rant for another place and time...

Wall-E has become the first animated movie to be named Best Film of The Year by the Los Angeles Film Critics.

The futuristic robot in space film topped the critics' list on Tuesday, giving it an Oscars boost.

British actress Sally Hawkins claimed the Best Actress prize for Happy-Go-Lucky and Sean Penn's portrayal of assassinated gay San Francisco, California, politician Harvey Milk won him the Best Actor honour.

Late star Heath Ledger and Penelope Cruz snagged the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards for their roles in The Dark Knight and Vicky Cristina Barcelona respectively.

Lewis Honoured With Humanitarian Oscar

Veteran comedian Jerry Lewis will be honoured with an Academy Award for his humanitarian work at next year's Oscars ceremony.

The 82 year old is set to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Hollywood event in February in recognition of his annual fundraising telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The beloved funnyman helped found the research organisation in 1950, and has reportedly raised an estimated $2 billion (GBP1.31billion) for the cause since his annual U.S. telethons began in 1966.

Sid Ganis, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, says, "Jerry is a legendary comedian, who has not only brought laughter to millions around the world but has also helped thousands upon thousands by raising funds and awareness for those suffering from muscular dystrophy."

Lewis will join a list of stars who have received the intermittently-awarded honour, including Bob Hope, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman.

Another I'm excited to see is Defiance. It looks like Robin Hood meets Schindler's List.

I didn't love Zwick's The Last Samurai, but I liked it, and I liked Blood Diamond more. If Zwick gives me reason to like Defiance even more, I'll be pleased.

Of all the Oscar contenders I haven't seen yet, I'm most exctied for Darren Aaronofsky's The Wrestler.

That Mickey Rourke is really something. I'm glad he's got a movie this good-looking coming out.

Oscar Buzz and Awards Season 2009

It's December! Guess what that means!!!

Since Spout saw fit to make a banner for our group on the Groups page, I thought it was only fair to start our 2009 buzz thread and get the juices flowing. You know, one of our four major predictors, the Critics Choice Awards, has its nominations being announced tomorrow by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, followed closely by the Golden Globes and SAG. Keep up to date here on all of the lists and nominees as they get announced. Get ready to discuss the awards season. I have a feeling we're going to have a doozy this year... the SpoutBlog has already been hitting on some of the short list announcements and the subjects of great speculation, not the least of which include whether or not Heath Ledger will posthumously be nominated for any award for his Joker portrayal in The Dark Knight. Also - is Wall-E good enough to be nominated for Best Picture (I think Animated Feature is in the bag).

Also, now that it's after Thanksgiving, we're seeing the awards season push of films. Any interest you this year?

Let's live up to our hype and get to buzzing. After all, it's the most wonderful time of the year for us Oscar fans! :-)
