Thank you! I know a lot of people didn't appreciate it, but I really thought it was a fun, well done and creative film with some pretty good effects. It didn't change my life in any significant way, but I was actually disappointed I didn't see it in the theatre after I caught it on TV. There's something to be said for a good entertaining fantasy film with good special effects.

hmmmmm. Maybe I will give it another chance.

Also Disney's Treasure Planet. Maybe also Atlantis.

Oddly enough Kathy Ireland's Alien From L.A. might also count.

I haven't actually seen it, but I heard this Spanish movie Timecrimes deals with a lot of similar types of ideas.

Timecrimes is definitely a great movie and well worth a watch if you like Primer. The time travel concept is a little more basic and easier to follow in Timecrimes, but it still works really well.

I remember when Primer was showing at a local film fest, the buzz was that it was "the next Pi" (Pi isn't a time travel story, but it's an artsy math/paranoia movie - the first directed by Darren Aronofsky)

If you liked Primer, I'd imagine you'd also like the storytelling of Charlie Kaufman (i.e. stuff like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Adaptation), though we're starting to get away from SF now...

Excellent suggtestions guys. I have seen Eternal Sunshine (one of my favorites) and Adaptation (it was less memorable but maybe I'll rewatch it.) Thanks again, Im definitely going to pick up Timecrimes soon.

no problem, also i should clarify that the reason this movie is steam punk is because of all the machines that run on cogs and springs. Its a weird movie but I enjoyed it the story and the atmosphere of it a lot.

Steamboy is the best pure Steampunk outh there.

I agree with you the whole liberal application of the term. I haven't seen Steamboy yet, but I'm definitely going to check it out.

Boy, a bunch come to mind right away for me.

...and, if we can include animated features (which I see no reason we can't), I feel like a lot of Anime features could fit into this category, especially:

I never realized it, but I love steampunk films, since I had no idea "Steampunk" was even a genre until recently. I'm not sure why exactly. Maybe its the whimsical element, combined with historical elements? I'm not really sure, but I somehow really connect with these films.

I'd second the Hellboy recommendations, especially Hellboy II. I would also point to some of Terry Gilliam's early films, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, as having steampunk aesthetics even if they aren't self-consciously made to be part of the sub-genre. This is an interesting request, as it's hard to come up with recommendations that aren't more just steampunkish and not so much steampunk through and through.

The most pure Steampunk feature film is the anime Steam boy. It's fantastic and sure quench your thirst for brass and goggle fueled fantasy.

Then there's the Disney Classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The Golden Compass claims to be steampunk, and it is in a simplistic way, but it's awful.

There's a short film The Mysterious Geograohic Explorations of Jasper Morello which is as pure as you'll find, but it's a bit boring. The animation is really intricate and facinating to watch.

How about City of Lost Children or the Hellboy movies.

In the non sci-fi realm, I would suggest Sukiyaki Western Django. It's not really a steampunk movie but it contains some steampunk elements.
