I think the rating system should allow you to rate movies with half stars. There are a number of movies i am giving 3 or 4 stars to when in fact I want to give them 3 1/2.

It is listed here on Spout along with other films by Pal Erdöss I cannot find anything on Amazon, that is it for now...the film sounds interesting though. I appreciate you asking about it.

I just enterd Spout because I was in a surch of a movie called Gyilkos kedv by Erdross.

If anyone could help me find this mouvie I will be gratefull. One of my professors from Romania (I am from Romania) is acting in this film, and we are trying to find all the movies where he appeard.

Please excise me for any inconvenience due to this message post, but I will appreciate any help.

I think it's fantastic, definitely the best film recommendation system I've used (it's a lot better than, say, Yahoo Movies)

In fact, it's rather addictive.

Do you see MovieMind primarily as a way to rate movies , rather than to get recommendations? Have you tried rating movies from list views? Is that any better? I'd love us to deliver on the expectations you hav from Netflix, so your feedback is really important.

As for importing your ratings from Netflix, they actually limit what we are able to pull in from their site. Unless there is a Netflix employee out there that is willing to give us a hand with this...Michael, you out there?

I'd like to have the option to see more than 4 or 5 recommendations at a time, maybe the option to display, say, 20 titles per page.. Also, in addition to being able to rate the movie or click "I want to see it", I'd like to be able to add it to my lists from this page.

Look at place where you can rate the movie, with the five stars. To the left of the five stars is an icon with a circle and a slash through it. If you click on it, it will change the status of the movie to "I'm not interested." I'm assuming it won't show up anymore after that.

BTW, why don't you want to see Silence of the Lambs? Just sounds too disturbing to you?

Thanks Bill, that bug is definitely fixed for me.

The kinds of recommendations still seem to be pretty much just popular mainstream movies and extremely popular older movies that I happen to have never seen. It doesn't seem too tailored personally to me. I know that it will probaby get more accurate as more people rate movies though.

May I inquire what kind of algorithms you use in the MovieMind to make suggestions?

Ok y'all. The bug is fixed and MovieMind now works as designed. Just in time too. We were written up in TechCrunch yesterday and they gave a positive review to this tool.

That does clarify things. Is there a way that can be indicated better on the actual page without cluttering it with too much text and instructions? Or maybe have instructions below somewhere.

Also there seems to be a bug in the fact that when I uncheck the check boxes for including movies that I've already rated or listed as ones I want to see, those types of movies still show up...

Actually, when you first go to the MovieMind page (and you are logged in) it will present you with recommendations based upon your cumulative ratings. You don't have to enter a movie or a genre. The thought behind doing that was to help narrow the search. You know, Saturday night and the family wants to watch a comedy. Select the comedy genre and have a bunch of titles recommended...and, if you don't want titles recommended that you have already seen or want to see, just uncheck the boxes that say, Include movies I've rated want to see.

Does that help? Confuse matters? Can we describe the process better?

I don't like that movies that I've already rated keep showing up and they still have that big green "I want to see this" bar although I clearly have already seen them.

I just don't get this MovieMind thing. What's "Select a movie" + "Enter movie title" for? If I just want some recomendations according to my ratings, why can't I just click some "Recommend me" button and get the recomendations? This "Enter movie title" thing doesn't even work, it always shows the same movies no matter what I've written.

The basic functionality is spot on but it needs polishing to become not only useful but painless. The ratings should save in the background, not block further ratings while the first saved. Get some threads on those. Everything involving a hit back to the server should be done without getting in the way of me using the tool. When the page first loads up, load up the next set of movies in each direction. That way even if I've just rated all the movies on that page and I click a direction button the server's not immediately doing any work, just loading up the cached set.

As far as recommendations go, I'm witholding judgement. Netflix has over 2,000 movies rated by me and a much deeper dataset to compare against. Not to mention a more mature algorithm. To compare, I have ~250 movies rated in Spout and you guys just launched this service. I'm sure it will come along nicely.

Looks good so far, keep up the hard work to iron out the little details and make it a true joy to use!

Sure. I should have specified. Safari is where I have the problem. More specifically, when typing in a title and clicking on the selections that come up in the drop down menu below, it goes nowhere. It is as though the clicking of the links doesn't work. Have had this happen both times I tried to use this feature with Safari.

As I said, this problem does not occur with Firefox. Have not tried it on Mac with Internet Explorer as I am moving away from I.E. altogether. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the honest feedback. Can you offer some more detail? What exactly doesn't work with Safari? We haven't seen any issues on our end.

Thanks for all of the great, thoughtful feedback on MovieMind. The team and I have certainly been taking it to heart. To be honest, the first pass of the tool was really focused on the brand new user and offering them a reason to sign-up for membership to the site. Obviously there are issues when you have committed yourself to the site and have created some rather large lists...like the movies you've seen. We're are working to fix those things now and will be having something to show you all in the next week or so.

Thanks so much for your time and attention. We seem always to be able to count on our core membership for input!

I agree with Rizzo - I love the idea of recommendation systems, but I got frustrated when the same newest releases kept popping up. Rizzo and I also use filmaffinity and movielens and I like filmaffinity for it's classic and foreign recommendations (lots of spanish flics) and I had never even heard of Luis Garcia Berlanga before ( and I consider myself pretty well read in film) - now that my Spanish soulmates have all raved about him I can't wait to see his stuff. Movielens recommendation system is really close to perfection (it just needs more titles) because it's predicted ratings are almost always spot on for me and they have some variety (classic, foreign, cult) to their recommendations.
These are my initial thoughts. I will say that I was excited to see a new feature here and spent some time trying it out.

I found that I going through about four "pages" of more popular movies (what you're talking about here Rizzo and Jymkakta) was the tipping point for me. After that, I started getting some obscure (and really good!) ones coming up.

I have a new problem now though... I have about 2000 movies "I want to see", and only about 1000 of those are ones I'll end up actually watching in my lifetime. I think I'll make myself a couple new lists "Movie I NEED to see" "Movies that have been recommended to me, that I haven't seen yet" so I can sort my "I want to see" list a little better.

I think my goal is a little different from other people here at Spout tho... Sort all the movies into 2 lists.

1.) "Movies I haven't seen"

and

2)"Movie I have seen"

then have SUB-lists :-). I do like how quickly this allows me to run through movies on Spout now. There was a lot of browsing that needed to happen before I could have information, and ability to rate and list at my fingertips. It's all happening so fast!

I joined MovieLens to give it a try, I'm an Alligator "Alligators enjoy the dramatic, the sad, the powerful. One of their favorite movies is Winged Migration, but it makes them hungry."

I've never seen Winged Migration...

I am excited and intrigued by the possibility of whatever may pop up, but somewhat disappointed in what does...here are the results of 5 titles and the initial 4 choices for each:

Odd Man Out; A time to Die; Internal Affairs ( hell, it's with Gere...-37); A question of Honor

The results are not at all what I expected, but interesting nonetheless and I am glad you have it and see it as a site improvement whether it shows items that I expected or not, but I rather expected that the choices coming up would bear some semblence to the original, whether it is generally (or my rating ) acknowledged rating; same time period; similar director/actors; etc...I do like that the films that come up, do include 'foreign' as similar

I have not tried this at GreenCine or Netflix to compare.

It's not clear whether you're getting recommendations based on one of your favorite movies or whether you're required to rate all movies that pop up when you enter your favorite flick. I didn't see all of the movies that popped up so I wasn't able to rate. Seems like you have to earn you recommendations by rating. I just want recommendations based on my movie watching history! Maybe there's a disconnect between asking people to rate vs. entering your favorite movie. Maybe it should be one or the other that earns your recommendations.

This looks like a very cool feature. The drag and drop box spectacular. It really adds to the functionality of the site. Kudos to whoever came up with the name, MovieMind is a great name for this service.

I looked at it and I guess I don't know exactly how it works. All of those movies that pop up, are those the recommendations? The ones I got all just seemed like that latest new releases. Is there somewhere else I have to actually go to get the recommendations taylored for my ratings?

We created MovieMind as a way for all sorts of people (from the casual consumer to the serious film fan) to get an intelligent list of recommendations based upon their ratings, contacts and experts. So the question is, does it live up to that promise?...and if so, how could you see using it?...and if not, what sort of special sauce would make it tastier?
