I probably shouldn't even open my mouth here because I have NOT seen any of the movies on this list, except for one... "300" ranks right up there with the best-of-the-best of the "feel good, blood pumping, mega-violence" movies. It ranks right up there with movies like The Wild Bunch and The Magnificent 7 and The 13th Warrior and The Warriors and Rocky and Bloodsport and Conan the Barbarian and The Alamo and EVERY Bruce Lee and Clint Eastwood and John Wayne movie!

"300" is an EXCELLENT movie and one of my favorites so that is why I voted for it in spite of the fact that I have not seen any of the other entries ... Although I am looking forward to seeing them ALL...

Someone lent me their copy of this book, and I'm actually only halfway through it still, but I'm really hooked.

So for this poll I tried to pick movies that came strictly from graphic novels. For instance there were some I was originally going to add, but my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series. In the case of American Splendor I couldn't tell if these were "comic books" or "novels" (I haven't seen the movie either...) so I just left it off to keep the list as focused as possible. And as for anything Japanese or manga based, that's just another huge world that I might do another poll about later, but for now I didn't include anything from that. Sorry if I missed your favorite, but please feel free to discuss.

I had no idea that Ghost World and Road to Perdition were from graphic novels! Must not have paid close enough attention to the credits. When I first saw the subject of the poll, I thought "heck, I probably haven't seen any of these films." But turns out I've seen half of them. Had a hard time choosing between Perdition and Ghost World; both were impressive and well done. In the end it was mostly a coin toss. :-)

I liked History of Violence all right, but V For Vendetta was too preposterous. The hero, in choosing Guy Fawkes as his alter-ego, isn't remembering or applying his history correctly. A friend and I argued about the film being romantic (she maintained it was; I said no one who tortures someone else, no matter what their motives, is being romantic).
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40637/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 14:28:37 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40637SkyPilot13
I liked Ghost World, but I voted for A History of Violence because it was so interesting to watch three times.

The first time, I was riveted by Viggo Mortensen, wondering about what his character was really thinking.

The second time, I enjoyed watching how Viggo's performance pointed to the revelations later in the movie.

The third time around, I gained an appreciation for the nuance in Cronenberg's direction and Viggo's performance.

I suppose more than I like the movie, I like Viggo in it.
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40635/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 12:20:47 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40635pippin0613
Great poll and such a tough choice for me! My three I was bandying back and forth were Ghost World, Road to Perdition, and V for Vendetta. I liked them all about equally. I ended up voting for Road to Perdition because it was visually beautiful and because Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) is becoming (or just is) one of my favorite directors and because I love Tom Hanks and Paul Newman and because it's a poignant story...and because I knew it would probably not get many votes. Sentimentality won out, I guess, though I relate to Ghost World more than any other (and it's arguably the edgiest of the choices), and I like the theatricality of V, which looks to me more like a graphic novel in the way it was filmed.
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40634/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 06:40:12 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40634JimBell13
The question asks which is my favorite--different from which is the best.

My fav is Ghost World. It really has something to say, and, watching it cold, I took awhile to catch on where the film was going--sort of like the main character!!

Road to Perdition has wonderful cinematography--what a visual delight. But the story was not as strong.

I also gave consideration to A History of Violence, an extremely well-made movie, but I was a bit let down by some scenes near the end (e.g., the sex on the stairs) that were unnecessarily ambiguous or vague.
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40632/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 05:36:17 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40632mercurial13
Well, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is my favorite graphic novel (like protexblue mentioned, Watchmen and a number of others were originally published in separate comic book issues) but is the worst film adaptation.

300 and Sin City tie for my favorite.
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40630/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 02:39:28 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40630joem18b13

Risselada:

joem18b:

Probably another essential entry for the poll would be The Dark Knight Returns.

Was The Dark Knight based on that graphic novel? I didn't realize it was a strict adaptation of any previous source. Why was anyone so afraid of the plot being leaked then?

urk! what was i thinking? somehow i was connecting Batman Begins with The Dark Knight Returns.

never mind...
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40628/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 25 Feb 2009 01:11:08 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40628protexblue13

Risselada:

my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series.

Actually, Watchmen was released as a comic book mini series over 12 months and then compiled for the trade paperback.
Re:Which of these films based on graphic novels is your favorite?http://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Polls/Re_Which_of_these_films_based_on_graphic_novels_is/657/40625/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 24 Feb 2009 22:19:28 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:40625Smooth_J13
I'm not big into graphic novels--I'm a member of the camp that Risselada's in, I just went out and bought a copy of Watchmen last week and am scrambling to finish it before the movie comes out.

I agree that History of Violence is probably the best of the choices, but my favorite would have to be Sin City.
