This is primarily a mindf*ck movie that depends wholly on the performance from Hugo Weaving. It absolutly doesn't fail in this regard. I'm not sure yet.

Great mentions. I always mention The Interview when talking about Australian movies as well!! I picked this one up totally randomly from the libarary without knowing anything about it. It was a wonderful surprise!

I have a friend from Australia who burned me a copy of Chopper and said I definitely had to check it out, but I still haven't. I guess I should get around to it.

And I've been interested in seeing Bad Boy Bubby for quite a while. I was able to check out Rolf de Heer's Ten Canoes through the Spout Maven program and thought it was quite inventive. I'm sure Bad Boy Bubby is something quite different. But I heard someone refer to it as A Clockwork Orange for this generation which I found interesting. I'm also fascinated by the idea of people who are forcibly isolated from society for much of their life only to be unleased on it. The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is one of my VERY FAVORITES. I gathered from the description that Bad Boy Bubby is something along those lines??
Re:Weekly Theme for April 6: Everything Aussiehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_April_6_Everything_Aussie/625/41526/1/ShowPost.aspxThu, 09 Apr 2009 21:25:27 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41526Smooth_J9
The Proposition is one of my favorite movies ever, and it happens to take place in that one desert in Australia (I think a restaurant's named after it or something). Kangaroo Jack was pretty horrible, but I think it's the only other movie I know that takes place in Australia that hasn't already been mentioned.
Re:Weekly Theme for April 6: Everything Aussiehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_April_6_Everything_Aussie/625/41516/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Apr 2009 23:35:19 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41516joem18b9
Don't have time right now for the links, but a few that I liked:

The Castle

The Dish

A Town Like Alice

Ten Canoes

Japanese Story

Flirting

Gallipoli

15 Amore

and of course, Road Warrior
Re:Weekly Theme for April 6: Everything Aussiehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_April_6_Everything_Aussie/625/41515/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Apr 2009 22:18:50 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41515leeroy7119

mercurial:

And I'm gonna go ahead and mention Dead Alive since I doubt we're going to get around to doing a Weekly Theme on New Zealand films. It was a beautiful film, but there was just something that was holding it back from being a truly magnificent film. I really liked Baz Luhrmann's other Aussie centric film Strictly Ballroom. It was interesting to watch it after seeing all of his later films and seeing how his personal style blossomed from his first film.

A film that completely transformed my life was Muriel's Wedding. It was one of those movies that I could totally relate to at the time of my life that I first watched it and remains a favorite to this day. Toni Collette (pre-Sixth Sense), Rachel Griffiths (pre-Six Feet Under) and an ABBA score, gotta love it.

You can't mention Australian films without mentioning Paul Hogan and the indelible Crocodile Dundee. One of those horribly bad yet awesomely good films that you can't help but love. Lest we forget that it was nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award. Something to think about.

Somersault was a really interesting independent flick from down under. Abbie Cornish was insanely good as the emotionally and physically scarred runaway looking for herself in a chaotic ski town. Worth checking out.

Yes, I'm going to say it: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. A bunch of drag queens consisting of Agent Smith from The Matrix, Leonard Shelby from Memento, and General Zod from Superman driving through the outback in a pink bus. 'Nuff said.

One that ALWAYS make me tear up is Babe. Cute little talking pig trying to be a dog. For the longest time I thought this was an English film but eventually found out that it was an Aussie pic.

Another family friendly Aussie film is The Rescuers Down Under. Interestingly, both of the Rescuers movies deal with extremely dramatic issues of kidnapping and child abuse which I really respect considering they are Disney films.

Preempting American History X with the remorseful, introspective Neo Nazi rethinking his life, Romper Stomper had Russell Crowe and quite a bit more emotion.

And I'm gonna go ahead and mention Dead Alive since I doubt we're going to get around to doing a Weekly Theme on New Zealand films. It is probably my favorite slapstick comedy / horror film. Love Love Love it.

Quigley Down Under - I vaguely remembering my parents dragging me to this at the movie theater when I was 8 years old. All I remember was that my Gummi Bears were a helluva lot more interesting that the movie.
Re:Weekly Theme for April 6: Everything Aussiehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_April_6_Everything_Aussie/625/41510/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Apr 2009 16:08:25 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41510indieabby889
Hooray! Aussie films have formed the background of my early film education...and they continue to rank among my faves. Here are the ones I love:

Breaker Morant (about Australian soldiers in the Boer War)

The Last Wave

Picnic at Hanging Rock (Combine with "The Last Wave" for a surreal Peter Weir double feature!)

The Man from Snowy River (based on an epic poem by Aussie poet Banjo Patterson, who also wrote "Mulga Bill's Bicycle," a favorite book of mine as a kid)

My Brilliant Career (Jane Austen meets Louisa May Alcott in the Outback...and it's a true story!)

Rabbit-Proof Fence (error kept me from getting the link. Gross.)

And, of course, no list would be complete without Mad Max.
Weekly Theme for April 6: Everything Aussiehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Weekly_Theme_for_April_6_Everything_Aussie/625/41505/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Apr 2009 05:29:00 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41505leeroy7119
I've been meaning to do this for a while now.
