Carroll) is working on a special growth formula that he hopes will help to feed the Earth's ever expanding population. When one of the scientist's assistants injects himself with the formula he goes mad and attacks the scientist. In the ensuing struggle one of the test subjects, a three foot long tarantula, escapes it's cage and wanders out into the desert. There is one catch, the version of the serum that the spider has been injected with causes it to keep growing exponentially. Soon it is the size of a car and attacking cattle and people. By the time the local Sherrif and the town doctor (played by the always priceless John Agar) figure out what is going on the spider is bigger than a house and still growing. By now it is not hard to find but it is also virtually unstoppable... machine gun fire and dynomite seem to have no effect. By the time the Airforce scrambles a squadron of fighter jets to battle the giant arachnid it is over 100 feet tall and heading directly towards town. This movie is a lot of fun and definately worth your time if you ever get a chance to watch it. Also, take a good look at the jet squadron leader... barely recognizable in his helmut and oxygen mask... it is none other than Clint Eastwood in an uncredited role!

Clint also appeared briefly, and again uncredited, in Revenge of The Creature , the sequel to Creature From The Black Lagoon , as a young lab technician. I think this may have been his first movie role.

                                                       < GOR >
Re:Weekly Theme for August 25: Monster Madnesshttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_August_25_Monster_Madness/625/34399/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 26 Aug 2008 17:32:58 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:34399Risselada37

mercurial:

I loved how Matinee made fun of and embraced the cheesy monster movies of the 1950's and 1960's with MANT!

For a moment there, I thought you said "Manatee." Now I'm thinking I really wish there was a monster movie with a giant mutated manatee monster.
Re:Weekly Theme for August 25: Monster Madnesshttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_August_25_Monster_Madness/625/34398/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 26 Aug 2008 17:31:45 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:34398Risselada37

leeroy711:

I've just moved Equinox to the top of my netflix queue. At least in the classic sense. Sure, I know the classic Harryhausen monsters; "Jason and the Argonauts" naturally, and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" even features James Mason and company running from an iguana. "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is a classic. But these cannot measure up to a movie of "The Giant Gila Monster" caliber.

However, science-fiction is something that has always been in my life, and science-fiction offers some of movies greatest monsters. Although it falls into mainstream, the alien in "Alien" is easily one of the greatest monsters of all time. But this is not really my sci-fi passion, that is reserved for Star Trek. I have been a Treker since birth. Every lizard-thing that captain Kirk took on could be on par with the most giant of gila monsters. But wait, there's more; "Star Trek: First Contact", specifically, the Borg. The Borg scared me silly when I was younger but now, they really are a favorite monster of mine as I have followed them in all the Star Trek I watch. If I wished to digress the infinity of my nerdyness I could go on and on with Star Trek monsters but wont.
Re:Weekly Theme for August 25: Monster Madnesshttp://www.spout.com/groups/Weekly_Theme/Re_Weekly_Theme_for_August_25_Monster_Madness/625/34368/1/ShowPost.aspxMon, 25 Aug 2008 21:51:37 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:34368leeroy71137

mercurial:

I loved how Matinee made fun of and embraced the cheesy monster movies of the 1950's and 1960's with MANT!

And the really hardcore monsters in my book are Jeff Goldblum in The Fly (especially when he gets his prickly fly penis and wants to mate), the monster in Jeepers Creepers (that opening scene with the monsters truck steadily approaching the brother and sister is intense), and King Kong (the 1933 original) is great aside from the racist subtext.

I just bought Matinee used on VHS for $2 at Bookmans so I could show my kids. I saw it in the theater the weekend it came out, I followed the viral marketing campaigns, and am slowly becoming a J.J. Abrams fan (despite never seeing a single episode of Lost). I guess the idea is: Make what you are watching seem more real by making it more obvious that what you are watching is through the eyes of a camera. I also have a problem (for somewhat of the same reason) with movies shot entirely in digital like Cloverfield and Diary of the Dead.

I can't say that I loved Blair Witch, but as a whole, I thought it was extremely clever, especially the marketing. If you recall, the trailers were extremely short and they didn't show anthing. And the actors hid away for the first few months of the release.

There was a similar film that came out a few years before Blair Witch called The Last Broadcast in which these guys go into the woods to find the Jersey Devil.
