The lead in both of these films plays a lone assasin working for mobsters. I really like the story behind Branded to Kill a lot. This was supposed to be just another factory cookie-cutter Japanese gangster flick. Seijun Suzuki decided to give the character a bit more umm.... character and throw in some dream logic scenes to make it a bit more special. He was promply fired.

So, to answer your question: if you are into any of the older Japanese cinema, I would highly suggest Branded To Kill or pretty much anything else by Seijun Suzuki. (Story of a Prostitute and Fighting Elegy are my faves) As far as Ghost Dog goes, I'm not a huge Jarmush fan ( I think Rizzo is though) but I would definitely suggest checking it out, especially after BTK. It's fun to see modern directors putting things in their films that were obviously influenced by previous auteurs.

Emery
Re:Pick a Pairhttp://www.spout.com/groups/Movie_Games/Re_Pick_a_Pair/598/41345/1/ShowPost.aspxMon, 30 Mar 2009 18:55:53 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:41345leeroy71136

csprague:

leeroy711:

sevenate-9:

I suppose some people might put up with the harrassment if it's coming from Demi, but I can't say 'm in that camp.

Demi '94?.................. yes please. Wildly different movies!

You could also watch Made in Britain with American History X as "movie where main character is a neo-nazi skinhead who plays in the new Incredible Hulk movie that most people prefer over the 2003 version because it is completely formulaic and predictable".

Or,

First watch The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989) and then Delicatessen (1991)

*POSSIBLE SPOILER* I really can't comment on the connection without giving out spoilers. There's also the well-known Twilight Zone episode How To Serve Man (1962), that'll go well with these two as a starter (pun intended). Werner Herzog takes documentary footage from a man who was a self taught expert on bears, before he was eaten by them, and turned it into Grizzly Man.

The other pairing I have would be F for Fake and The Hoax.

In F for Fake, Orson Welles interviews Clifford Irving, a journalist who spent a fair amount of time interviewing a famous art forger, who could never be convicted. The Hoax tells the story of Irving a few years later when he created forged Howard Hughes diaries and sold them for fun and profit.

What pairs do you have?
