I hadn't thought about the extent to which different countries may confuse music quality with musician image.

I'll say this, though--I know many American hipsters who will categorically dismiss all Neil Diamond songs. I have a friend who finally admitted "Well, 'Solitary Man' is a pretty good song," and that was a major breakthrough for him.

I don't know what the hipster situation is in the UK, but hipster closed-mindedness has affected Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Hipster" is more of an insult than a compliment here. Artists and musicians will deny up and down that they're hipsters, then seconds later they'll talk about the latest Improv Everywhere prank, or some band that's "even better than Crystal Castles."

So in my town of GR, people are trying to be hip while avoiding the "hipster" label.

But I digress. When I was in Cuba, I met grown men who un-ironically listened to Abba and Tina Turner's 90s albums. I couldn't really tell if they knew these artists weren't popular in the US anymore, but whether they did or not, I couldn't see any reason to mention this to them.

Re:Recast HIGH FIDELITY (2000) & Top 5 Challengehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Filmgaming/Re_Recast_HIGH_FIDELITY_2000_Top_5_Challenge/563/36468/1/ShowPost.aspxFri, 17 Oct 2008 22:29:29 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:36468Kowalski7628

SkyPilot:

Recast HIGH FIDELITY winner -- kowalski76

Great list kowalski! D) the dream sequence with the Cantina Band coming to talk to Rob in clicks and whistles while Shatner responds with paused sentences. Outstanding!

~El Cid
Re:Recast HIGH FIDELITY (2000) & Top 5 Challengehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Filmgaming/Re_Recast_HIGH_FIDELITY_2000_Top_5_Challenge/563/36030/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Oct 2008 16:02:17 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:36030chrismorrell28
Good points mate..

...Sounds like i'm not alone in looking forward to when Frost, Pegg and Wright do another film together? "how to lose friends ..." looks just awful!..
Re:Recast HIGH FIDELITY (2000) & Top 5 Challengehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Filmgaming/Re_Recast_HIGH_FIDELITY_2000_Top_5_Challenge/563/36020/1/ShowPost.aspxWed, 08 Oct 2008 10:12:22 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:36020rustymills1828

chrismorrell:

It's a cute movie .. That's why every time someone makes a top cult movies list a few of those movies slip onto it. Too easy. Try these out.

5. TapeHeads - Terribly dated and overconfident about it's own cleverness, this move still charms.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku_wLVbIUA4

4. Story Of Ricky (Ricky O) - Generally I don't go for Kung Fu movies but maybe thats because most Kung Fu movies don't have people punching through bodies like balsa wood and using their own intestines as strangulation weapons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQf4Zowi3Jg

3. Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man) - Possibly the strangest zombie movie I've ever seen. This one gets downright existential. Plus there's a really hot Italian chick that gets naked... a lot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQf4Zowi3Jg

2. Repo Man - A movie ostensibly about suburban alienation, punk, repo men, a strange Chevy Malibu, metaphysics, aliens, secret government agencies, neutron bombs, lobotomies, fruitcake, air fresheners, plates of shrimp and more. Infinitely quotable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=554AX4l1tmw

1. Night Of The Creeps - A late night cable classic. Still unavailable on an officially released dvd. I paid $40 for my bootleg dvd on ebay a few years ago. And I would have paid more. It's that awesome. As a sidenote this movie actually references John Carpenter, Kurt Russell and Bruce Campbell. That had to be worth extra points to help is snag the top spot. "Thrill Me".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAQ0u4LKNmw

Top 5 Challengehttp://www.spout.com/groups/Filmgaming/Top_5_Challenge/563/36004/1/ShowPost.aspxTue, 07 Oct 2008 17:50:45 GMTcdd0f780-13db-4d93-b0f4-ada579d02ae7:36004ElCid200228
I realize that we are generally pretty PG around here, but my friends and I put together this Top 5 that I thought was hilarious and works with the music theme of High Fidelity. Without further ado I give you:

Top 5 Songs that are really just Thinly Veiled Metaphors for Oral Sex

5. "Tomorrow" Silverchair: Sample Lyric - "Wont you come with me, to a place in a little town - The only way to get there's to go straight down -
Theres no bathroom, and there is no sink - The water out of the tap is very, hard to drink"

4. "Candy Shop" 50 cent: Sample Lyric - "I'll take you to the candy shop - I'll let you lick the lollypop - Go 'head girl don't you stop- Keep going 'til you hit the spot"

3. "Rock Me Gently" Andy Kim: For the longest time I thought that this song was just about regular old sex but check this Sample Lyric - "Oh my darlin' Oh my baby - You got the moves that drive me crazy - And on your face I see a trace of love"

2. "Misfire" Queen: Keep in mind this song is sung by a dude about a dude (not that there's anything wrong with that). We thought we were the only ones to do so until we saw High Fidelity.

So how about a good-natured duel?

Off comes the first glove: Recast High Fidelity.

And the second glove: What's your favorite Top Five list? Do you have a list like "Top 5 Movies the Coens Must Remake," or "Top 5 Bill Murray Characters," or even "Top 5 Albums to Make Out to"?

Prizes for the best recasts and lists. Winners will be announced Friday, Oct. 17.

En guarde.

    John Cusack ... Rob Gordon

    Iben Hjejle ... Laura

Todd Louiso ... Dick (the quiet one)

Jack Black ... Barry (the Jack Black one)

Lisa Bonet ... Marie De Salle

    Catherine Zeta-Jones ... Charlie Nicholson

    Joan Cusack ... Liz

Tim Robbins ... Ian 'Ray' Raymond

Brian Powell ... Middle aged customer (the guys won't help him)

Alex Desert ... Louis, the cool customer

Erik Gundersen ... Marco (the guy Charlie falls for)

    Bruce Springsteen ... Himself
