Really interesting point, kowalski. I hadn't thought about the extent to which different countries may confuse music quality with musician image.

I'll say this, though--I know many American hipsters who will categorically dismiss all Neil Diamond songs. I have a friend who finally admitted "Well, 'Solitary Man' is a pretty good song," and that was a major breakthrough for him.

I don't know what the hipster situation is in the UK, but hipster closed-mindedness has affected Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Hipster" is more of an insult than a compliment here. Artists and musicians will deny up and down that they're hipsters, then seconds later they'll talk about the latest Improv Everywhere prank, or some band that's "even better than Crystal Castles."

So in my town of GR, people are trying to be hip while avoiding the "hipster" label.

But I digress. When I was in Cuba, I met grown men who un-ironically listened to Abba and Tina Turner's 90s albums. I couldn't really tell if they knew these artists weren't popular in the US anymore, but whether they did or not, I couldn't see any reason to mention this to them.

Some great picks others mentioned are Shirley Henderson for Rob's friend Liz and Charlotte Gainsbourg as Marie de Salle. This would be a real flip from her conscientious, vulnerable role in I'm Not There; I think of de Salle as thicker skinned, a real heartbreaker.

I also really like Steve Coogan as Ray. To me Coogan seems especially suited for strange or slightly larger-than-life characters, so although I can see why rustymills18 and chrismorrell picked him for Rob, I still think Coogan shines better as a character actor.

I laughed out loud when I saw rustymills18 cast Sting as the middle-aged square. And filmgal81, John Malkovich would be great as Ray!

gsanchet made an interesting point: since in Hornby's novel the characters are Brits arguing about American music, the characters seem sort of silly. I know what gsanchet means, but I feel like there's something about good art that invites people to connect with it, and the artists themselves, on a very personal level.

For example, I have strong opinions about what the best Shakespeare plays are, and those were written by an Englishman five hundred years ago! Why does art that I love make me feel like I've befriended the artist? Why do I make the jump from a thought like "The Tempest is one of my favorite stories," to a thought like "Shakespeare and I really would've gotten along." Can anyone relate to this? I don't mean just with Shakespeare, but with any artist.

Thanks, I enjoyed taking part.

Hornby is a big lover of American music as he re-iterated later on with his book 31 Songs. The list follows the trend set by his choice of music for High Fidelity. From reading both books I'd say he doesn't confuse music with image, which I think a lot of us brits may be guilty of doing a lot more than our American friends. He has little or no musical hang-up's. If he likes something that's not normally perceived as cool, he's not afraid to champion it still.

4. Talk to Me -- I want to see this one. Don Cheadle plays a radio personality in the 1960s. I bet this isn't the kind of DJ you're looking for, though.

3. Ghost World -- interesting, sad flick about compulsive record collectors.

2. Hustle & Flow -- flawed but affecting movie about a pimp trying to get into the recording business.

1. 24 Hour Party People -- Comedy based on Factory Records producer Tony Wilson. He fostered the rave scene in Manchester, England, and released New Order's records. In this movie you see the club scene transformed from a place for live music to a place for DJs and ecstacy atmosphere.

Doug Pray's Scratch could be # 5. It's a Documentary, though.

Couldn't in good conscience use Frost and Pegg because then it would turn into a Pegg vechile. I just wanted Pegg to play smaller role but thought the Barry and Dick scenes would be great with Pegg and Gervais.

I really liked Friel from Pushing Daisies and thought "caring sister but will bitch you out if you cheat on your girlfriend" was right in her wheelhouse. Beckinsale could play that superficial ex great even though she usually plays the herione. Mortimer is just enchanting, and thinks she brings way more than Hjejle ever did to that role.

3. Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man) - Possibly the strangest zombie movie I've ever seen. This one gets downright existential. Plus there's a really hot Italian chick that gets naked... a lot.

2. Repo Man - A movie ostensibly about suburban alienation, punk, repo men, a strange Chevy Malibu, metaphysics, aliens, secret government agencies, neutron bombs, lobotomies, fruitcake, air fresheners, plates of shrimp and more. Infinitely quotable.

1. Night Of The Creeps - A late night cable classic. Still unavailable on an officially released dvd. I paid $40 for my bootleg dvd on ebay a few years ago. And I would have paid more. It's that awesome. As a sidenote this movie actually references John Carpenter, Kurt Russell and Bruce Campbell. That had to be worth extra points to help is snag the top spot. "Thrill Me".

I realize that we are generally pretty PG around here, but my friends and I put together this Top 5 that I thought was hilarious and works with the music theme of High Fidelity. Without further ado I give you:

Recast HIGH FIDELITY (2000) & Top 5 Challenge

Hey there Movie Friends... It's been a while, but High Fidelity is one of my all-time favorites and I'm going to be all over this one. I'll post some favorite Top 5's that my friends and I have done in the past later, but I have to find them in my email. For my first attempt here is an updated casting for a makeable movie:

Rob Gordon -   Casey Affleck
Laura - Rachel McAdams
Dick (the quiet one) - Michael Cera
Barry (the Jack Black one) - NPH
Marie De Salle   - Jenny Lewis
Charlie Nicholson   -   Eva Mendes
Liz   -   Tina Fey
Ian 'Ray' Raymond   -   Ed Norton
Middle aged customer (the guys won't help him)   -   Loudon Wainwright III
Louis, the cool customer   -   Jermaine Clement
Marco (the guy Charlie falls for)   -   James Marsden

So, I wanted to stick in to the same ages as the original characters (ish). Let's face it though you can't recast Jack Black's role and expect someone to pull it off. You have to go in a different direction and I think NPH himself... Mr. Neil Patrick Harris could be hilarious in redefining this role. With Ian (aka Ray) you need a guy who will play out of his normal range for the effect and I think it would be hilarious to see Ed Norton rock this. For Marie you need a cool chick that can sing and Jenny Lewis has established herself as the Indie Queen with some acting chops in her past to boot... Who didn't love it when she kissed Fred Savage in The Wizard?!? Keeping it in the music realm I thought it would be great to have the guys in the store refuse to help Loudon Wainwright. Then, for Louis you need the guy to be cool, but I couldn't think of a cool black actor in that age range that isn't Will Smith. So, if you can't get a black guy to be cool you need a white guy with an accent hence Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. Finally, with the slightly younger age range the dream sequence musician couldn't be anyone other than Bono.

It's a cute movie .. It IS a British novel,most of the music references ARE English >I've never resented it but,naturally thought of a Brit recast straight away...In light of rustymills18's post i will offer a bit of extra..qualification..

The key thing about the original book was that the story revolved around people who were distanced from the original music. They were brits who were arguing about American rock and roll, and that made it a bit more pitiful than the movie version. These Brits were even arguing about things that weren't about them. So keeping with that theme of misplaced nerds in the wrong place at the wrong time, I went with a different sort of cast and set them as sort of expatriots in Harajuku Japan:
